Wyndham Clark over Justin Thomas—Is this the worst Team USA decision ever?

“I’m definitely a little, you know, disappointed,” said Smylie Kaufman. What was he so unsatisfied about? The analyst was alluding to the exclusion of Justin Thomas from the American team. But he didn’t stop there, as he also questioned the reasoning behind picking Max Homa for the squad. And he wasn’t the only one confused about the decision. However, Wyndham Clark doesn’t seem to want to hear any of it, as he came out in support of the 33-year-old.

“Max, like you said, is a great guy,” conveyed the 30-year-old Clark in a pre-tournament interview ahead of the President’s Cup. He also noted how the golfer has a likable personality, whether on or off the course before complimenting him as a partner, “He’s a very good teammate,” said the American. “Especially when his game’s on, he can compliment your game so well.”

The athlete then went ahead to recount the 2023 Ryder Cup, where he dubbed Homa the “Iron Byron.” Now why did he do that? Wyndham Clark was seemingly impressed with his skills, recalling the 6-time PGA Tour champ’s gameplay. “He was making a lot of great pars,” said the golfer as he recalled Homa’s 2023 Ryder Cup figures (3-1-1), “Then obviously a handful of birdies. So it frees you up and it’s really nice having a partner that you’re like I can count on him so when I hit some poor shots.”

But is that all there is to being a good golfer and teammate on the course? ‘No,’ says Clark, as he also disclosed how the relationship between teammates is crucial. “If you don’t have that camaraderie, it sometimes can be awkward,” highlighted the 3-time PGA Tour champ as he once again dubbed Homa with a moniker, but with a different one from ‘Iron Byron’; One of the best teammates you can have.

The PGA Tour pro also pointed out how momentum might be affected if you’re not able to communicate with your teammate. But that doesn’t seem to be the case with Homa, as per the 2023 U.S. Open champ’s perspective. He said, “Max will come up and get in your face and say let’s go. Or vice versa, you feel like you can approach him to do the same thing.” Well, the 30-year-old certainly was supportive of the golfer, so much so that it felt like Clark was in his shoes at a point in time.

The backlash that Wyndham Clark received earlier this year

A lot of people took to send hate to the American golfer ahead of and during the 2024 Paris Olympics. The reason? Just because he was chosen instead of Bryson DeChambeau. Some expressed how they thought the LIV Golf Pro was more deserving of the opportunity, while others simply conveyed their dislike for Clark.

Have an interesting take?

But the athlete strived to prove everyone wrong, and he did so, to an extent, when he finished T14 with a score of 11-under 273 at Le Golf National. He also finished T7 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, T13 at the BMW Championship, and clinched a scintillating eighth place at the TOUR Championship. It sure feels like Wyndham Clark proved everyone wrong with that statement by using those golf clubs of his. Well, now it’s Max Homa’s turn to do the same at the President’s Cup!
