A lot of players have received backlash from the golf community over the years. However, the attention of many fans had been especially locked on Patrick Cantlay for a number of reasons. The golfer had gone hatless during the Ryder Cup that ended a little while back, earning the ire of many.

But now, the professional is gearing up to play in Tiger Woods‘ new league, which is set to kick off in January. And a new rule was added, not too long ago, by TGL to control the pace of play. However, in a surprise of sorts, the enthusiasts took up this opportunity to smear the American star’s image as they took to the internet, taking a jab at Cantlay!

The golf world has been rife with news related to the tech-infused league that is set to take place in 2024. Mr. T’s brainchild saw yet another development a while back as a “shot clock” was introduced to control the pace of the golfers playing in the tournament.

The new initiative provides just 40 seconds for a single player to make their shot, following which they will receive a “shot clock violation” and a “one-stroke penalty.” However, instead of attention being focused on the league, many took up this chance to take a dig at none other than Cantlay, who was accused of slow play at the 2023 Masters Tournament.

The professional was called out for his speed by many, including his peers Brooks Koepka and Viktor Hovland. Keopka and Jon Rahm saw themselves waiting for the group in front, consisting of the 31-year-old and Hovland, to finish their rounds during the final day of the major.

Have an interesting take?

The golfer was even brought under immense scrutiny for another one of his actions at the Ryder Cup when he went hatless on the Friday foursomes during his pair-up with Xander Schauffele. This led to many speculating how he did the same in protest of pay at the biennial tournament, all the while earning the fury of others. And now, this time seems no different, as he was again pushed into the spotlight, albeit unknowingly.

Is this terrible news for Cantlay?

The new rules do make the gameplay more efficient in terms of speed. However, for Cantlay, what followed might have been nothing short of an unfavorable situation as he came to be put under scrutiny once more, unbeknownst to him. Let us take a quick look at some of the responses to the new regulation.

Rahm had announced his withdrawal from TGL a while ago. The golfer had done the same, citing reasons of tension and commitment that the new venture would bring, which would inevitably be a bit too much to handle for him. However, a fan made use of this issue to taunt none other than Cantlay.

Another person went ahead to mention how the tech-infused league is gearing up to accommodate the 31-year-old so that it doesn’t turn out like the 2023 Masters. Well, one can’t deny that it was funny.

Here comes another jab at the professional. This time, a follower went ahead to ask about his presence at the event, all the while alluding to how the rule was made for the 8-time PGA Tour champ.

Let’s take a break from the comments aimed at Cantlay. Although Nelly Korda isn’t playing in TGL, an ardent fan did point out how the LPGA icon wouldn’t need such rules, mentioning the pace of play as he went ahead to praise her.

Now back to the PGA Tour pro, another follower dubbed it as nothing short of an awful development for the 2X BMW Championship winner, all the while expressing his concern for him, albeit sarcastically.

A fan went ahead to upload a video of how he feels about the idea of a slow pace of play. He pointed out how it is alright if it is a rare occurrence, but it is another matter entirely if it is a regular one, causing problems to others as well.
