Vijay Singh downplays Scheffler's $17.9M year—Is money the true measure of success in golf?

He’s had a scintillating season, this year! Doesn’t take much to guess who, seeing as how only one person enjoyed that kind of success this year on the PGA Tour. Yes, it’s Scottie Scheffler, the golfer who won seven times this season on the men’s circuit, including the FedEx Cup finale. But even so, despite boasting a better money game, he couldn’t beat the stats of a former world No. 1. Cue Vijay Singh’s entry into the picture!

It wouldn’t be wrong to call the current 61-year-old golfer a monster back when he was at the prime of his career. The reason? You should take a look at his figures from the 2004 PGA Tour season and everything would become crystal clear.

Even after two decades, the 2004 version of the legend still holds the record for the most number of wins in a season (9 victories) on the PGA Tour from 29 starts. Surprised? Well, there’s more. The athlete also holds more top-10 finishes in a year than what the 28-year-old Scottie Scheffler raked in this season. The 2024 Masters champ, excluding the TOUR Championship finish, has a total of 15 top-10 placements while Singh boasts 19. Impressive, you must agree!

For even the senior pro agreed with his feats as he wrote on X, “A look at then vs now…l might still be tied for most wins in a season. 2004 was a great year,” while sharing the comparison.

While Singh sure does shine over Scheffler when it comes to wins, and the top-10 finishes, the dollar bills that he earned in 2004 pale in comparison to what the young athlete earned this year. The 3-time major champ boasts a whopping $10.9 million in 2004 earnings while the 2-time major champ has a mind-boggling $29.2 million, which makes it a $17.9 million deficit.

But the scales balance a bit when the total money earned throughout their career is taken. The 61-year-old boasts $71,281,216 in career earnings from 638 starts while the 28-year-old has $71,793,586 in dollar bills from 130 events. Well, the actual numbers when taking the total events played do set Vijay Singh at a disadvantage regardless. Keeping that aside, the 2024 Masters champ, alongside his caddie, sure did leave a mark in the golf world!

The 13-time PGA Tour champ garnered a total of 7 wins, including the TOUR Championship title. That’s not all. He also emerged victorious at the 2024 Paris Olympics which helped him clinch a gold medal at the same. And by his side was Ted Scott, the richest caddie at the moment on the PGA Tour circuit, all thanks to the pair’s finishes.

Back in 2023, the looper’s earnings reached a remarkable figure of $843,000, per the usual caddie payout rates. But come 2024, the bagman’s earnings reached new heights as he raked in as much as $5,238,650 by helping Scheffler on the greens. This, coupled with the cut of the money the golfer garnered from the Olympics and the Comcast Business Tour Top 10 finish, put his figures at  $6,042,450. Now only one question remains; will they best themselves (and Vijay Singh while at it) in the upcoming seasons?
