Scottie Scheffler calls out golf's toxic fans—Is he right to stand up against the negativity?

It was the 2024 U.S. Open. The ever-dominant Scottie Scheffler was having a hard time on the course. Surely, he would have looked for a better read of the greens. But there’s another thing that he hopes for 100%. And it’s for the fans to stop wanting to see the golfers suffer, as many were excited to watch the world No. 1 struggle to find his game at Pinehurst No. 2 back in June.

“That’s one of the things that I find funny about people,” said Scheffler about the same in an interview with Dan “Big Cat” Katz and PFT Commenter during an episode of the Pardon My Take podcast. He also pointed out how peculiar it is to find people rooting for the golf course instead of the professionals playing the game.

“I don’t understand why golf is the sport where like we want to watch those guys suffer,” said the pro, expressing confusion over the phenomenon. He also noted how fans of other sports, unlike golf, just want to see their athletes performing at their best. “Every other sport it’s like, we want to see the best,… football players at their best, like we want to watch guys dunk the basketball, make long threes and golfer, like, no no…”

What was the PFT Commenter’s response? Funnily enough, he dished out a comical reply eliciting a laugh from Scheffler. “It’s because we stink and we watch you on TV,” replied the podcast host, “We’re like, we want you to experience just like a taste of what I experience every single shot when I play.” Well, he sure was able to witness what he wanted back at the 2024 U.S. Open when the golfer finished T41.

Scottie Scheffler, over the four days of play at Pinehurst No. 2, hit a total of 10 bogeys while carding just 4 birdies. Moreover, he also scored a double bogey at the par-5, 5th hole during the second round, causing his total to reach an unremarkable 8-over-par 288. That’s not the only time the athlete faltered in his gameplay, as he also recounted one of his shots at the FedEx Cup finale: “I shanked one last week, so there you go PFT!”

Scottie Scheffler’s ‘Shankelson’ moment at the 2024 TOUR Championship

It was the final round of the 2024 TOUR Championship, and the 28-year-old was four strokes ahead of the golfer at T2 during the tee shot at the 8th hole. It was then that the 2024 Masters Champ hit an errant tee shot that landed in the greenside bunker. His second shot, however, failed to impress as well, as the pro shanked the ball off the end of his club, sending it off the green.

But he soon managed to recover from the unfortunate shot, saving the hole by carding a bogey. By then, Collin Morikawa had caught up to him. The world No. 1, however, didn’t shy away from the challenge, as he went on to score three more birdies and an eagle on Sunday. The result? Scottie Scheffler won the FedEx Cup final with a total of 30-under overall. Truly iconic, yet dramatic, wouldn’t you say?
