A Scottie Scheffler show! That would be the best way to describe the 2024 season of the PGA Tour. The Paris Olympics were no different, with the American pro clinching the gold medal. But now, the golfer will not be present as the men’s circuit moves to the Sedgefield Country Club for the next event on the Tour, the Wyndham Championship, set to kick off on Thursday, August 8. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any other talented athletes in the field.

The winner at the 36th PGA Tour event in 2024 will take home a cut from the whopping prize purse of $7.9 million. But as in every event, only a single professional may be able to clinch the top spot. And it’s the same at the Wyndham Championship as well. Regardless, there are sure to be favorites in the field.

A total of 156 golfers will be teeing it off in North Carolina as per the official field set aside by the PGA Tour and the tournament. The final event of the regular season, meanwhile, will be the last chance for many professionals to make it inside the top 70 of the FedEx Cup standings to tee off at the playoffs starting next week. But who will end up winning the title of champ?

1. Lucas Glover: The 44-year-old emerged victorious at the 2023 edition of the Wyndham Championship in scintillating fashion. He did so by carding a 20-under after four days of play, beating Russell Henley, who finished T2, by two strokes. Although the golfer only has a total of two top-15 finishes from 20 starts this season, he is undoubtedly a favorite to win the event. Moreover, the 1-time major champ will also look to defend his title at the same.

2. Brian Harman: The American is the highest-ranked golfer in the field at the upcoming event. How did he do that? Well, it’s all thanks to the three top-10 finishes he garnered in the 2024 PGA Tour season, with his best coming off at the PLAYERS Championship(T2). Aside from that placement, the 2023 Open Championship winner also carded a T5 at the Sentry and a T9 at the Travelers Championship. Interestingly, he is safe inside the FedEx Cup standings but that won’t stop him from aiming for the win at the upcoming event.

3. Shane Lowry: “All I want is one more,” said the hopeful Irishman after losing out on the Open Championship despite an amazing performance. Although it didn’t push him past the finish line in the way he hoped it would, his run was nothing short of scintillating seeing as how the golfer led the scoreboard for the first three days at Royal Troon. Regardless, he will be hoping to increase his tally of wins to two at Sedgefield, the first of which came alongside Rory McIlroy at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. His fans would surely want him to get one more, especially at the Wyndham Championship!

4. Robert MacIntyre: “It’s a lifetime dream,” said the Scottish pro while raking in his second PGA Tour victory at the Genesis Scottish Open. He had done so by beating the likes of defending champ McIlroy. And now, the golfer will be aiming to realize another one of his dreams at North Carolina as he hopes to increase his tally of five top-10 finishes. But, will he be able to do it? The golfer’s fans would surely be hoping for it!

5. Sungjae Im: The 26-year-old is one of the stronger contenders in the field. Even though the South Korean golfer doesn’t boast a win in 2024, if you take a look at his stats, Im’s performance on the greens has been anything but disappointing. Take his display of golf at the Royal Troon as an example. For the amazing T7, he managed to card at the Open was especially remarkable. What’s more, it helped increase his number of top-10 finishes to a whopping seven. But is he the golfer to look out for at the Sedgefield Country Club?

PGA Tour’s final test ahead of the 2024 FedEx Playoffs in North Carolina

The ground at North Carolina occupies a spot on most of the athletes’ favorite course lists. This is especially true for Webb Simpson for he once said, “Sedgefield is one of the great golf courses on the PGA Tour.” And not many would disagree with him, especially after learning that the course was designed by renowned architect Donald Ross.

Since it first opened for play in 1926, the course has undergone a lot of developments. But the latest and final one came in 2007 from restoration expert KSGB when it underwent a $3 million redevelopment project. Consequently, they brought back the course to Ross’ original intent, which has now resulted in the 7,117-yard grounds boasting quite busy greens with prominent slopes.

It appears the golfing world is in for an exciting weekend at the Wyndham Championship as the 156 athletes tee off on August 8. Nevertheless, who do you think will win the tournament this time around? Let us know your picks below.
