Scottie Scheffler's performance in tough weather—sign of a true champion or just luck?

Hot, humid, and with a temperature that feels like it’s above 105 degrees! The first playoff event in Memphis saw drastic conditions in the weather as a field of 70 golfers teed it off at TPC Southwind. Even so, Hideki Matsuyama was able to clinch the title of champion despite the harsh weather. Now, the top 50 golfers in the FedEx standings will tee off at the 2024 BMW Championship and the community can’t help but ask: how will the weather fare in Colorado on day 1 of the event?

The field of 50 athletes will tee off at the Castle Pines Golf Club on Thursday, August 22. However, as per the official weather report shared by the PGA Tour, a cooler temperature will be present throughout the day, with gusty outflow winds impacting the course and the play each afternoon.

The weather forecast, meanwhile, predicts a cloudy morning with scattered thunderstorms later in the day and during the afternoon. There is a 58% chance of rainfall in the day, causing the humidity in the air to increase as much as 44%. Moreover, the golfers will also be able to experience a temperature as high as 80° with winds blowing North to NorthWest at 10-15 mph Thursday morning at the BMW Championship.

On the other hand, the temperatures will drop as low as 57°, with a 41% chance of rain in the evening. It would be accompanied by scattered thunderstorms leading to partly cloudy skies overnight and an increased humidity of 77% in the atmosphere. What’s more, the winds would be blowing at a speed of between 5-10 mph towards the South. Well, it appears the golfers sure have a difficult week ahead of them in Colorado.

The thunderstorms might prove to be costly for the 2024 BMW Championship since the first Playoff Event in Memphis also witnessed a similar situation. Back then, the predictions had picked up a possible thunderstorm on Saturday morning, following which the circuit changed the tee timings to ensure a smooth and safe play.

How did the weather affect the PGA Tour a week before the BMW Championship?

The third round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship witnessed the rounds getting delayed as the tee times were pushed to start at 9:45–11:45 a.m. CT from the 1st and 10th tees. A possible thunderstorm, coupled with the hot and humid conditions at TPC Southwind that persisted even in the third round, did cause disruptions at the event, although on a smaller scale, unlike the Wyndham Championship.

Have an interesting take?

The 2024 Wyndham Championship witnessed the Hurricane Derby hit the course and its nearby areas, causing them to suspend the first day of play. Even though the circuit was close to finishing on Sunday, darkness forced Matt Kuchar to finish his game on the next day. Coming back to the present, although the weather may pose a hindrance to the smooth functioning of the event, the 50 athletes will surely hope to dish out their best at the 2024 BMW Championship.
