Holding the most prestigious position of the No. 1 rank on the OWGR standings, Scottie Scheffler has been a name buzzing all over the golf world for quite some time now. His direct entry to the prestigious Ryder Cup and other forthcoming events have been a joy to experience for the talented golfer. Even his recent performance of ending the BMW Championship at T2, adds to the laurels of the American golfer.

Though, not far behind him on the list lies the Irish golfer Rory McIlroy. Despite losing his chance at the $20 million event, the goal seems all set for the Irishman once again. Both the rank holders have a prominent position to play for and will look to give their all in the final installment of the $75 million race.

Ever since being dethroned from the number 1 position in February 2023 at the WM, Phoenix Open, McIlroy has had his aim set on reclaiming back the auspicious title. His 32nd rank in the tournament led to this drop in his position.

Even 6 months later, the Irish professional still is trying his utmost to get back to the top. As per a Twitter (now X) account, though, the golfer once more has a chance to achieve the long-awaited pursuit. He wrote, “@McIlroyRory is once again the only player that has the chance to take the No.1 crown from Scottie Scheffler this week.”

While the title might seem close to the golf star right now, it would require an exceptional display of skills from him to go over the line. After dethroning Scottie Scheffler back in October 2022, McIlroy regained his 1st place. Though, two months into the new year, things changed for the golfer. Scheffler soon taking the lead, has created a tuff between the two.

The Irishman, however, has not been able to hit the final nail as his recent performances must have left a sour taste in the golfer’s mouth. Coming so close to different trophies and the big top ranking, yet not being able to achieve it, would have caused some attention to be drawn from the four-time major Champion.

McIlroy just can’t seem to achieve the final step on the No.1 ranking journey

The year 2023 has been a tough pill to swallow for the 24 PGA Tour Victor. Since losing his claim on one of the greatest titles of the game, matters have not exactly been looking in control for the golf star. Looking at his latest finish in the 4th position during the BMW Championship, McIlroy lost one more golden opportunity to retain the highest spot.

Even prior to this tournament, despite being exceptional on the greens, the PGA Tour Pro could not cross the final line in any of the tournaments, except the Genesis Scottish Open. Not only the PGA Tour events but also the Major Championships witnessed an almost similar streak greeting the golfer.
