Is the lack of support for Tom Kim a sign of bias in American golf fandom?

Long story short. He accused them of cursing. He apologized to them later on. Tom Kim sure has been at the receiving end of quite some drama at the recently ended Presidents Cup. But it seems that the golfer setting it up with the Jim Furyk-led team hasn’t absolved him of all the sins, as per the fans. They were spotted ganging up against the pro once again following the end of the biennial event.

A post was shared jointly by the official Instagram handles of the International team and the South Korean golfer. It consisted of a video of the athlete dancing to the song Y.M.C.A. by Village People as the people beside him cheered him on. However, the fans in the comments section did not find the professional impressive, especially after being at the center of much drama these past few days.

It all started with his antics at the Thursday Fourballs when he vacated the 8th hole before Scottie Scheffler finished his shot. The interview after the session on Saturday afternoon saw the golfer accusing the players from the American team of cursing at them. Although he did apologize to Xander Schauffele and Furyk later on, the words dished out remained a talking point in the community. This, coupled with his other antics on the course caused the fans to convey their thoughts through the Instagram post.

Tom Kim’s actions fail to impress fans at the Presidents Cup

Although Scheffler and Kim were having fun by teasing each other during the Thursday Fourballs, his actions at the 8th hole left many fuming. Even Paul McGinley took to react to him walking off to the 9th tee with his playing partner Sungjae Im. For he said, “That’s disrespectful in my opinion,”  all the while dubbing it “bad behavior.” Some fans took to agree with the veteran as they commented, “Lost a lot of respect for this guy this week.” Others just took to dub him a “tool” and a “clown.”

Over the four days of play, the South Korean golfer teed off in four matches. Out of the same, he won just one Fourballs, 4&3, against Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark, on Saturday. In the rest of the matches, he lost one on Thursday while tying the other two. Consequently, a couple of followers took to allude to the results while dishing out jabs at the athlete. One responded, “Player who made a lot of noise but won nothing,” while another typed out, “Where do you put the L in YMCA?”

Have an interesting take?

“As it got towards the end, it got a little feisty out there,” said the pro after his match on Saturday. Continuing with his interview, he added, “I could hear some players cursing at us. That part wasn’t really — I don’t think there was good sportsmanship there.” Although he did go ahead and dub the whole thing as “fun,” the community had, by then, taken the golfer’s words to heart, and many negative comments were aimed at the American golfers. A user on Instagram hinted at the whole ordeal while commenting, “Hopefully no one swears around him!!” Seems like quite a poke at the 22-year-old athlete.

It sure was quite a dramatic four days at the Royal Montreal Golf Club, don’t you agree? Well, Tom Kim, for one, would. Especially since he was very keen on hyping up the fans in the exciting matchup that finally saw the American team defeating the International squad, 18.5-11.5!
