Is Collin Morikawa's jab at Tom Kim just playful banter, or is there real tension brewing?

Did you think the Presidents Cup rivalry and drama were the last of them? Well, you thought wrong, for the golfers seem to be equally, if not more, riled up and excited, all thanks to the upcoming tech-infused league, TGL. And it seems it was Tom Kim who got the brunt of it this time around, courtesy of Collin Morikawa, weeks after the former’s dramatic Presidents Cup tussle with the American team.

A new post was shared by the official handle of the upcoming league on their Instagram handle. The update just contained a single video, which included a rapid quick-fire round by Morikawa. Suffice it to say he sure did have quite some answers to the queries. But the most unexpected of them all came when the interviewer asked him the last question: “Who will have the most shot clock violations this season?”

Now, the answer should be pretty obvious! The American golfer hilariously replied, “Tom Kim… Easy,” to the query. It seems as if the South Korean professional for Morikawa appears to be someone who would take more time to hit or make their shot when the ball is in play. And the result of that would be? Exactly, you got it. A shot-clock violation!

What would take place if the violation were to happen? Unfortunately, if the golfer takes more than 40 seconds to hit their shot, the team would receive a one-stroke penalty. What’s more, it would be enforced by the referee in coordination with an official sitting inside the booth. Both of them would be responsible for starting and stopping the shot clock, including the management of the same during the match.

Quite a tough rule, but a necessary one, especially for a league like TGL. And Collin Morikawa seems to feel Tom Kim would be the person who would rake in a one-stroke penalty for his team. This brings us to the question: Does he feel that way, or is it all thanks to the drama that happened between the 22-year-old South Korean and the American team back at the Presidents Cup? That, we can never be sure of!

Have an interesting take?

It all started during the Thursday Fourballs at the Royal Montreal Golf Club when Scottie Scheffler had shot a crucial birdie at the par-3, 7th hole. The world No. 1 golfer yelled at Kim, “What was that?” to rile him up. And rile him up, he did! The golfer and his teammate, Sungjae Im, vacated themselves to the 9th tee box after claiming the point on the 8th hole. Bad Behavior? Disrespectful? Paul McGinley thought so!

But that just seemed to be the start of the drama. On the third day on Saturday, Tom Kim accused the American golfers of bad sportsmanship. “I think the start of the round was definitely a little harder, but as it got towards the end, it got a little feisty out there,” said the pro as he alluded to his Saturday Foursomes against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. “I could hear some players cursing at us.”

Although Kim did apologize to Captain Jim Furyk and Schauffele later on, the damage was done, and the American team had received more than enough flak for the same. Did the so-called resentment not end there but carry on to TGL? Or did Morikawa make use of the opportunity to just diss Kim owing to him being slower than Cantlay during the 2024 Genesis Invitational? Regardless of the two, one thing is for certain: TGL sure is going to be exciting with all the drama set to take place!
