The current golf scene is surely fractured. Even though Jay Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan introduced the merger in 2023, the framework for the same is not complete and the uncertain delay will affect the bifurcation for long. While many have taken sides on either ship, not everyone wants to see the best players like Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, and others rarely playing together.
At least Tony Ruggiero wants something to happen so that the golfers and fans benefit from it. And what could be better is to have an improved Official World Golf Ranking system to rank all the golfers, including those on LIV Golf. After the inauguration in 2022, the breakaway circuit tried to get its pros on OWGR, but due to its concept and various other things, the world ranking system rejected its appeal. After a few months, Greg Norman withdrew the appeal and revealed that they would not ask for it again.
This meant that players LIV aren’t ranked on OWGR and even seeing the best golfer at the four majors is difficult because the disruptive league’s player can rarely make it. So, what’s the solution? In an exclusive interview with EssentiallySports, Ruggiero, who has coached Bill Haas, Zach Johnson, and others, explained that the Tours need to figure out a way to rank golfers more accurately and “find a way and a pathway for the best players to play together more of the time.” He further added in the ES Exclusive chit-chat that golf has become more of a global game now and LIV Golf is doing a great job of scheduling its events in different countries around the world and introducing the game to many.

In recent days, the PGA Tour pros have complained, indirectly or directly, about having a stressful schedule because of back-to-back events and it inadvertently affects their performances. Ruggiero has a suggestion for that problem too.
One league with PGA Tour and LIV Golf more benefits
So far, the $3 billion has been nothing but the two entity’s chairman meeting and sending emails for the finalization of the deal. But the progress has been near to none and the fans stay curious about it all. Amidst this, to curb the fractured game of golf and grow it to another level, Tony Ruggiero wants more than just a better ranking system. As it has been introduced before too, the coach wants a global league.

He added, “I think they’ve got to come up with some sort of system where guys can kind of go play and pick where they want to play, and, you know, have more control over their schedule.” This way, golfers like Jordan Spieth would not be fatigued, and although it seems a huge hurdle in the way, it will work out in the end. Additionally, once a global Tour and ranking system is in place, “It’s going to have huge financial benefit for those who played” said Ruggiero.
The golfers will be able to play more together and fans will enjoy it too. After all, those who play more, earn more, and global golf will be improved for the better. Although Ruggiero shared his two cents on the game and its fractured aspect, it remains to be seen when and if the PGA Tour and LIV Golf will come together. And for the first time in years, the best will be laying together as always.
