Jay Monahan's fan move: Genius or just a PR stunt? What do you think?

Jay Monahan hasn’t had the best of years in 2024. Many events were plagued by unfavorable weather conditions, along with a series of withdrawals from them. And the fans? Well, they weren’t too impressed either, seeing as how the ratings went as down as 20% at a point in time. However, it appears that the commissioner of the PGA Tour has swooped in to save the circuit. But he wasn’t alone in doing that. Enter the spectators at the FedEx St. Jude Championship!

A video was uploaded by the official handle of the Monahan-led PGA Tour on X after the event in Memphis came to an end. It showcased a compilation of multiple snippets of various people attending the tournament and their conversations to produce a fun video on “Golf fan commentary from Memphis.”

The set of videos was nothing but entertaining to many fans. And they started flocking to the tweet as soon as they saw the video to express their approval for it. The post showcasing the Tour put some mics on the lucky fans and their comments throughout the event, despite the hot and humid uncomfortable conditions at TPC Southwind, sure did send the golfing world into a frenzy.

Jay Monahan and the PGA Tour get the fans’s nod of approval

Back at the 124th U.S. Open, Brandel Chamblee, a commentator, had dubbed Bryson DeChambeau’s win as “good fortune.” This didn’t sit well with many fans, including Paige Spiranac, who wrote on X“Brandel saying “good fortune” is why Bryson won the US Open is wild. Doesn’t even try to hide his hatred for him. Smh.”  And many of the golfing enthusiasts agreed with the diva while dishing out their reactions against the reporter. However, contrary to the major, the first event in the playoff witnessed the exact opposite taking place, all thanks to the spectators themselves.

As a result, many followers took to the post to express their appreciation for sharing such an entertaining video. Some commented, “this was great to listen to!” while others wanted more of this: “This is awesome. More of this, please,” and “This is a great golf video. I could watch it over and over. Also, relationship goals.” Another fan couldn’t help but commend the Jay Monahan-led PGA Tour for the same, “Good job, tour! Great content!”

Have an interesting take?

The first event of the FedEx Cup playoffs ended on August 18, Sunday. It saw Hideki Matsuyama emerge victorious with a figure of 17-under, all the while earning 2000 FedEx Cup points. And now, the top 50 in the standings will move on to tee off at the next leg of the playoffs, the 2024 BMW Championship at the Castle Pines Golf Club, followed by the top 30 teeing off at the TOUR Championship. A fan couldn’t help but urge Monahan and the Tour to continue this practice, as they commented, “This is great you should do this every week!”

Where did the PGA Tour get this idea from? Well, the Jay Monahan-led circuit themselves answered that question by commenting “h/t @Wimbledon” under the tweet. The tennis event had introduced ‘overheard’ through which random fans were slapped with mics and their reactions throughout the game were recorded. Although the move did garner mixed reviews from tennis fans, it wasn’t so when it came to the men’s circuit. Guess the PGA Tour deserves a pat on the back!
