‘Unlucky’. The one term that can be used to aptly describe the PGA Tour and its 2024 calendar. If there’s one thing that most of the events on the PGA Tour have had in common till now, it is the delays that have arisen due to unfavorable weather conditions. It wasn’t much different with THE PLAYERS Championship as well, which saw its first two rounds being suspended because of the same.

Well, now the community is eagerly awaiting the final day of play that is set to take place at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. However, if the past has taught us anything, it is to be wary of the weather conditions, which, at one point, even forced a signature event to be shortened to 54 holes!

What awaits the final day of play at TPC Sawgrass?

As per weather reports, on March 17, Sunday would witness a slight chance of a rain shower (15%). Meanwhile, the temperatures are predicted to be as high as around 80F and as low as 66F in the mornings. What’s more, it would be wise to expect a slight breeze with winds blowing from south to southwest at a speed of 5 to 10 mph.

Overall, it seems like the day’s play would go without a hitch. However, one shouldn’t forget the first two rounds, which got delayed as a result of bad light. Case in point: a 15% chance of precipitation does allude to a “partly to mostly cloudy” day on the greens, especially towards the end of the round. This would, in turn, force the round to be postponed to the next day if the issue of darkness came into play.

But such a situation would indicate only a handful of golfers would be affected, similar to the first two rounds. Thursday’s delay led to a total of nine golfers, including Jimmy Stagner, Chan Kim, Eric Cole, David Skinns, and Ben Martin, along with four others, being forced to finish their first round on Saturday. Meanwhile, Friday’s play being suspended led to only two golfers finishing their rounds on Saturday: Riyo Hisatsune and Ben Silverman.

However, there is a chance that things might proceed badly, unlike the past three days, leading to the round being canceled early on. This would, in turn, lead the play to be pushed to Monday, just like the recently ended PGA Tour event.

The Cognizant Classic saw Austin Eckroat clinch his first Tour win by beating the likes of Erik van Rooyen and Min Woo Lee by three shots. Interestingly, his victory came on Monday owing to unfavorable weather delaying the same. He was forced to leave the course on Sunday when darkness stopped play. Thus, if a similar situation is to occur at TPC Sawgrass, then there is a high chance of the rest of the play being shifted to Monday.

Xander Schauffele is currently topping the leaderboard with a figure of 17-under owing to his scores of 65-69-65 over the three days of play. Close on his tail are Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman in second and third place, respectively, followed by Maverick McNealy at T4.

The final day’s play will prove to be nothing short of exciting since Schauffele only has a single-shot lead over Clark. Thus, the tables may turn at any time, leading to the 30-year-old clinching the cup right under the former’s nose. Truly an exhilarating finale!
