In a recent Twitter video by Ryder Cup Europe, Rory McIlroy gets a note. It consists of some lines, he himself said, two decades ago about the Ryder Cup. The note says, “It’s not that important an event for me. It’s an exhibition at the end of the day.” He even said he won’t go “running around fist-pumping” if anything good happens in the game.
The 4-time major champion has four Ryder Cup wins to his name and will head to Rome as one of the most experienced and accomplished players with 6 editions under his belt. Age and golf have humbled McIlroy, and he now understands how grand the patriotic event is.
In the video on Twitter, he gets emotional describing how much the event means to everyone. He went on to call it the “purest competition in golf.” Regretting over his younger self’s thoughts, he also said, “Everyone should strive to be a part of the Ryder Cup. It’s the best feeling in the world. Nothing beats the feeling of winning the Ryder Cup as part of a team.”

What most impresses Rory McIlroy about the iconic event is being part of the team and winning the event, feeling like one has contributed in some way. The feeling of belongingness to your country and seeing its name shining in all its glory is indeed a feeling worth thriving for. The Irishman puts it into perspective beautifully and underlines the vision the European team aims to achieve.

McIlroy and Co. are desperate to redeem themselves
While Zach Johnson’s team, the USA, will step into the foreign land looking to defend their title, Luke Donald’s Team Europe will come searching for the trophy. In the video, Rory McIlroy can be seen bursting into tears in the 2021 edition at Whistling Straits and waiting to give the event another shot to claim victory.
He also states how annoying it is to wait for the bi-annual event to redeem oneself. Even Americans are familiar with that feeling. The last time Team USA won on European soil, Rory McIlroy was 4 years old. They are coming back to foreign land to card a historic win that last happened in 1993.

It’s tough to ignore the 30 years of waiting to card the win, especially when it comes to pride and passion. However, Marco Simone is the third course to host the Ryder Cup in continental Europe. The others were in France and Spain. The European team has won on the two other courses, and it’s natural to imagine they would like to stick to the winning streak.
