Stewart Cink's tease—Is the President's Cup team better off without LIV Golfers?

Just a few more days left until September 3, 2024. What’s so special about it? Well, the 6 wild card picks for the year’s President’s Cup, devoid of any athletes from the LIV Golf league, will be announced on that date. And Stewart Cink, the U.S. team captain Jim Furyk’s assistant for the event, couldn’t help but tease the same ahead of the prestigious tournament.

The 51-year-old Stewart Cink was spotted in a new episode of the SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio podcast. A snippet of the interview was shared on its Instagram handle, which showcased the golfer talking about the captain’s picks that will be announced after the TOUR Championship.

“I wish I could tell you more about it,” teased Stewart Cink as he alluded to the team U.S.A’s roster, “But I don’t have permission to talk about it that much. Furyk would probably give me a demerit if I told you too much.” Although the senior pro said the same, he made sure to divulge the number of athletes who are currently in the pool of potential golfers who might make the team.

“It’s not that many, it’s less than that,” answered Stewart Cink when faced with the question of whether the potential candidates for the wild card picks reached 12, 15, or 25. It’s a lot smaller number, more like 10. Surprisingly enough, it appears the team is close to being set in place, with the captain and his assistants keeping an eye out for how the group of potential golfers will fare at the 2024 TOUR Championship.

But interestingly, the stage for the same will be set without any of the LIV golfers present. For a separate stipulation in the criteria was announced four months after June 2023 following the PIF-PGA Tour merger announcement, in October: “All players (automatic qualifiers and captain’s picks) must be eligible to compete in PGA Tour-sanctioned competitions.” And it has also been followed to the tip, seeing as how Bryson DeChambeau was excluded from the automatic picks.

A LIV-less team for the 2024 President’s Cup

The six spots for the automatic qualifiers were locked down by the top 6 PGA Tour Pros as of August 25, Sunday, following the end of the 2024 BMW Championship. The likes of Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, and Sahith Theegala, made the team via the same for the upcoming President’s Cup. Theegala took the final spot even though he was ranked below DeChambeau, who is currently placed at No. 10 on the OWGR.

Have an interesting take?

As for the International squad, the likes of Hideki Matsuyama, Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Jason Day, Adam Scott, and Byeong Hun An made the team through the automatic qualifiers. And Mike Weir, the skipper, back in March, had divulged how there would not be any LIV players in the team. Regardless, the community would surely be hoping for an exciting tournament to take place this year at the Royal Montreal Golf Club. Who will win? That is a question that will only be answered on September 29.
