Is club-throwing a justified emotional release or just poor sportsmanship in professional golf?

Whether it may be a heated exchange on the course or just plain controversies, golfers have a habit of making it to the headlines. Golfers do talk about their past mistakes but adding humor to it is something only Adam Hadwin can do. After all, he is well-known for his sense of humor.

After watching his ball take an unwanted swim on the 18th hole at the 2024 PLAYERS Championship, the golfer got so frustrated that he chucked his golf club in the water. While many fans thought the reaction was relatable as it was a tough finish to an otherwise solid round, others believed it was totally unnecessary.

Anyway, recently the golfer took it to X to look back at his actions and answered some of the questions fans asked about his little outburst. All in good humor though. This fan asked the same question that must be on everyone’s mind whenever a golfer throws their clubs. “I’ve heard that throwing golf clubs is very therapeutic”, said the fan, and surprisingly, the golfer agreed and replied, “It very much is.”

If you think this hilarious jab of Hadwin on his actions stops here, you’d be wrong. This particular fan then went ahead and asked, “Any club give a better therapeutic feeling than others? Maybe the driver or 56-degree wedge?” the golfer replied with yet another playful dig. “Whatever club caused the problems is the one that feels the best!” said Hadwin. Now, as interesting as this fan interaction with Hadwin was, we all know this wasn’t the first time a golfer threw his club in frustration.

Remember the Rory McIlroy club toss at the BMW Championship this year? McIlroy’s frustration boiled over on the par-5 17th hole at the BMW Championship after missing the fairway with his drive. This incident was followed by a disappointing three-putt bogey on the 16th hole, ultimately settling for par on a hole that offered eagle and birdie opportunities. Well, he’s not the only pro golfer to do it.

Scottie Scheffler’s anger display at the 2024 St. Jude Championship

It doesn’t matter whether you are a PGA Tour pro or a seasoned veteran; the frustration on the course gets to everyone, and even our favorite golfers are sometimes seen doing the unthinkable. Well, one case of this club-throwing controversy was seen with everyone’s beloved Scottie Scheffler, who is well-known for his calm demeanor. Everyone’s aware of how sensational his 2024 season has been, right? From major wins to an arrest and a gold medal, he has seen it all this year.

But during the opening round of the FedEx Playoffs at TPC Southwind, Scheffler made headlines for all the wrong reasons when he lost his cool on the third shot of the 13th hole. His frustration boiled over after his tee shot landed in a bunker. To add to that, his next shot also found more sand, and then he slammed his club into the ground in the sand in sheer frustration. Despite the meltdown, Scheffler still managed to win the event but it sure cost him a bogey-free opening round.
