In 2018, the world stood shook when Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson faced off against each other in a stupendous battle off the Tour, one-on-one! And since then, the historic venue where they fought tooth and nail for the win has become a hotspot for every golf enthusiast. It’s safe to say that the course has since been raking in the big bucks. However, it seems like now that’s only going to increase.

The golf course in discussion is widely popular: Shadow Creek Golf Club. It initially served private guests of Steve Wynn, a popular name in the resort business who opened it in 1989. However, now the course is arguably the most expensive in the world. And with its most recent announcement, it’d be safe to say that the members, despite the course’s history, will not be pleased!

Once an exclusive privately used course, Shadow Creek Golf Club opened up to the guests of MGM Resorts International in 2000, after MGM Resorts acquired it. The course began charging a fee of $500 to the member, which at the time was no small sum. Since then, of course, this has risen, and the fee now stands at $1000.

A four-figure green fee is already a big deal, but the price is increasing by 25 percent going forward. $1250 for playing golf at peak hours on the course is likely to shock many golf enthusiasts, as the amount is presumably the highest known green fee.

The course is currently closed for maintenance work. It is possible that the re-opening could reveal some renovations and additional features to attract guests. However, since it’s already one of the most expensive courses, there might be some criticism regarding the price hike. The course management did not offer a reason for the recent price hike. However, it is likely that they are not worried about reduced reservations, considering how the Shadow Creek Golf Course has gained a lot of media coverage thanks to the mammoth events it hosts!

It was the Tiger Woods vs. Mickelson match from five years ago that first began turning heads towards the course. However, even after Lefty dominated the 15-time major winner for the win on the greens, the course continued to receive attention!

After hosting the first edition of ‘The Match,’ the course also hosted the CJ Cup in 2020. It was the only PGA Tour event to take place on the course. Following this, the course has been hosting the Bank Hope LPGA Match Play tournament since 2021.

Aside from hosting these prestigious events, the official website of the Shadow Creek Golf Club does a fine job of explaining why it’s more special than a lot (if not all) of the other golf courses the world has to offer!

Architect Tom Fazio compares Shadow Creek with the home of The Masters

Designed by Tom Fazio, the website claims that Shadow Creek Golf Club is one of the most exotic places in the world to play golf. Fazio, the architect who designed it, most notably redesigned the Adare Manor golf course as well.

Fazio’s quote on the official website of the Golf Club mentions how each hole in the course has characteristics that make a par score an achievement. “On the short and majestic 17th hole, for instance, the green has three times the width than the depth, so yardage control becomes of paramount importance.”

The architect, moreover, boldly compared his creation with the 12th hole in the Augusta National Golf Club, where “any tee shot allowing use of a putter for a second shot is an accomplishment.”
