Are LIV golfers like Bubba Watson just riding on the coattails of PGA Tour stars like Scheffler?

They[LIV Golf] honestly deserve a Thank You!” Don’t misunderstand. The PGA Tour fans weren’t actually on their side when they expressed their gratitude to the Saudi-backed league. Why? Well, they were hinting at Scottie Scheffler claiming the top spot in the Comcast Business TOUR TOP 10. The fans did so all the while pointing out how such a situation wouldn’t have been possible if not for the emergence of LIV Golf. And surprisingly enough, Bubba Watson seems to agree as well!

A video was shared by NUCLR GOLF on their X handle showcasing an interview involving Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, and Watson ahead of the upcoming LIV Golf event in Greenbrier. The RangeGoats GC skipper pointed out how the PIF-funded circuit has “changed the face of golf” while expressing excitement at being a part of it. But the real head-turner came when the golfer declared, “Scottie Scheffler has made a lot of money this year because of the changes that we’ve started putting in place.”

From the Player Impact Program (PIP) to the SSG deal and the PGA TOUR Enterprises, the league has managed to introduce many innovative developments for its members. However, crediting LIV Golf for the changes as a whole while attributing Scheffler’s wins and the money he earned to them didn’t sit well with many fans. As a result, they took to their X handles to dish out their displeasure against the same.

Fans take multiple jabs at Bubba Watson following his ‘Scottie Scheffler’ remark

Out of the 17 starts Scottie Scheffler made this season, including the Olympics, he has carded a total of 15 top-10 finishes. Moreover, the current No. 1 golfer has raked in a whopping 7 victories, the last of which came at the Paris Games with a Gold medal. Consequently, he boasts a mind-boggling $28,148,691 in 2024 earnings, causing many to dish out comments against Bubba Watson; “Lol, Scottie Scheffler made money because he won. Not because of LIV. Increasing winnings but make a cut Bubba.” Another fan, meanwhile, sarcastically commented, “I wonder if there’s another reason Scheffler made a lot of money this year…hmm.”

The inception of LIV Golf in 2021 and the subsequent inaugural season in 2022 witnessed many golfers jumping to the Saudi-backed league. And Watson was one of the few who joined the league in 2023. Since then, he has just raked in one top-10 finish, and that too at the 2023 Tulsa event. Consequently, a couple of followers couldn’t help but allude to the same while taking a jab at the LIV Golf Pro for the Scottie Scheffler remarks; “This is the first time I’ve thought about Bubba Watson all year. What a sellout,”  and “Saying LIV Golf is the reason for Scheffler’s success is such a corny thing to say. Bubba has been washed for ages. Just keep playing in shorts for money. Just do that. That’s it. Lmao.”

The first Ryder Cup was held back in June 1927, during which the U.S. team defeated the European team 9.5-2.5. Since then, the prestigious event has been held every two years, with the last one witnessing Europe clinch the win against Zach Johnson’s team. A couple of users came forward to dub the aspect of team golf as “stupid” unless it was the biennial tournament, “Team golf sucks,” and “Team golf is stupid unless it is the Ryder Cup.”

Well, Bubba Watson sure did earn the ire of many of the golfing fans, especially the PGA Tour ones.  But what do you think? Do you feel what he said made sense or is he overreaching? Let us know in the comments below!
