In a historic showdown this Sunday, Europe has secured its Ryder Cup victory. Although the USA had a nightmare of a day to face, they started out pretty well.

In the neck-to-neck clashes happening simultaneously, the match between Tommy Fleetwood and Rickie Fowler was a crucial one. The latter made a blunder at one of the final holes. Considering how it was toward the very end, his big mistake put a full stop to the beautiful poem that the US team was trying to pen down. Golf beauty Paige Spiranac has something to say about the same.

Fowler’s blunder becomes a topic of discussion

With Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa, Brooks Koepka, and Justin Thomas winning back-to-back matches, the competition was nail-biting. The Europe team had comfortably put a 14 on the board and were waiting for that half a point to seal the deal. While the Americans led most matches, there were a couple of matches where the lead was with the Europeans.

In one of those few, Tommy Fleetwood held a lead against Rickie Fowler. It was one of the few matches where the European side had a comfortable lead from the beginning. Yet, Fowler recovered from it after the first nine and he was getting back into the competition.

The lead was 2-Up for quite some time until Rickie Fowler cut into the lead and made it a 1-hole difference. However, at the 16th hole, he missed a decent putt and conceded the win to Fleetwood. With 2 holes to go and a 2-Up lead, Fleetwood had already secured a minimum of half a point and hence secured the Europe team’s victory as well.

Paige Spiranac, in her tweet, wrote, “I know Rickie is a nice guy but you don’t concede that putt.”

This is not the first time a Fowler-Spiranac interaction has gained the golf world’s attention. Earlier in June this year, after the US Open, a parody account of Paige Spiranac shared a tweet about how ‘Spiranac’ would do a b**b reveal if Rickie Fowler wins a Major. The golf beauty later clarified the controversy and playfully denied the rumor that she stated that.

Looks like Spiranac won’t be alone in blaming Fowler for that, though.

How crucial was the Fowler match?

With almost all other matches having finished, Fowler’s match was one of the last few matches to finish. There were two other matches that were going tight and driving the American anxiety up against the roof.

With Fowler letting go of any chance that the US had after the 16th hole, the other matches started losing momentum as well. It is a bit of a stretch to assume this, but then maybe with Fowler winning his point, the other matches might have gone the American way as well. Just a thought though, since momentum and hope can influence sportspeople immensely.

However, what’s done is done, and there is not point really in pointing fingers at individuals for a team’s defeat. Perhaps if day one had gone better, things would not have been so hectic toward the end. Let’s congratulate Europe on their victory and look forward to our “monday.”
