After days of talking about how the Ryder Cup is fast approaching, it’s finally here. A pre-tournament press conference was held recently at Marco Simone, where the most controversial captain’s pick, Justin Thomas, answered a few questions. The conversation mostly centered on understanding his head space now and during the season so far.

One of the questions addressed his lows and the struggles he has faced of late. It focused on what was the lowest point for him and touched upon when Thomas had almost given up on his Ryder Cup hopes. And JT, being the candid star that he is, answered without reservations, revealing the event it all began at nearly four months ago!

Justin Thomas admitted that at one point he “fully accepted that whatever was going to happen was going to happen.” From his recollection, he said that that point came during the week following the Wyndham Championship. On the other hand, his lowest point came at the famed US Open, where he missed the cut.

“I would say, really, the U.S. Open was a really, really low place for me.” Thomas reminisced about how he ended up accumulating shots and finishing almost last in the event. Then he mentioned how he played quite well in the week that followed at the Traveler’s Championship.

JT found it weird. He regretted concentrating too much on the pressure of making it to the Ryder Cup team. The 30-year-old exclaimed that he should have focused on the playoffs instead. Moreover, he sounded a bit confused about the way his mind worked at the time.

Getting back to the topic of the Wyndham Championship, Justin Thomas said that the week after the event, he was a bit off. He confessed that it was time he gave up the wondering and made up his mind to accept whatever happened.

Fortunately, the golf pro had made it onto the team heading to Rome. And arguably, it was all thanks to his last high of the 2023 season that offset his US Open lows.

In the US Open, Justin Thomas didn’t make it to the weekend. He scored a 14-over before the cut, and like he said, he finished in one of the last five positions. Notably, he didn’t make the cut at the Masters in April either. In the Memorial Tournament that took place right before the US Open as well, he failed to make the cut.

On the contrary, in the Travelers’ Championship that happened right after the US Open, he finished in a shared 9th position. But then, in the four events following the Travelers’, he either didn’t make the cut or finished poorly.

At the Wyndham Championship, Thomas actually recovered a bit and finished in a shared 12th position. However, considering how the season has been underwhelming for him, he probably had little hope about the Ryder Cup. After the Ryder Cup team announcement happened, JT took part in the Fortinet Championship, soaring above his friendly rival Max Homa.
