The golf world steps on to yet another season of being in splits. An agreement framework was announced between the PIF that funds the LIV Golf and the PGA Tour on June 6, 2023. People were very optimistic about it. But days passed by and the deadline, December 31, 2023, got closer. The PGA Tour announced that it had entered into a Framework Agreement with the Public Investment Fund of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (PIF) to create “a global golf partnership.”
While the leagues successfully carried out their events, there was no update about it, and well, it’s 2025, and it’s still the same. And as it turns out, Adam Scott, who has been a member of the PGA Tour Board of Directors, has his say on it. The U.S. Department of Justice has been a major roadblock in negotiations between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. The DOJ required the removal of a non-solicitation clause that had prohibited both sides from recruiting each other’s players.
“Same as always. It sucks. It’s not worth talking about. Obviously, it’s so complex and when the government department (Justice) is involved, I think we sit and just wait for them,” Scott said. However, the situation could shift with a new administration set to take office later this month. Incoming President Donald Trump has claimed he could broker a deal between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf in “15 minutes.” In November, Rory McIlroy acknowledged that Trump’s victory in the 2024 election “clears the way” for unifying the two tours. However, Adam Scott agrees that things are still very complex.

“Soon there should be more movement,” the 2013 Masters champion said. “But it’s very difficult to bring all of this together, certainly from a competitions layout. It’s a lot. Someone has to compromise their product. I don’t like the sound of that generally. Who’s going to do it? Everyone a little bit? That’s not good. Someone a lot? That person is not going to be happy. It’s really a tricky one.”
While there have been no updates on the merger so far, and it seems far from happening, the PGA Tour has indeed managed to show rapid growth with every season.

The PGA Tour’s new regulations for improvement in 2025
The PGA Tour Board Policy along with the PAC came to an agreement that the Tour needed a couple of changes to make a substantial impact, and well they have already been implemented in the 2025 season. The PGA Tour Policy Board and Player Advisory Council have approved several major changes to the US-based circuit, with some set to take effect as early as January 2025. Described as “improvements to the tour’s competitive structure,” the updates include adjustments to field sizes, player eligibility, and the FedEx Cup points system, among other modifications.

These proposals were first introduced by the PGA Tour in October, following extensive feedback from its membership throughout 2024. The changes aim to create a more competitive and engaging experience for fans, sponsors, and players alike. After the changes, Adam Scott also stated, “The PAC discussions were based on several guiding principles, including our belief that PGA Tour membership is the pinnacle of achievement in men’s professional golf.” And of course, not to forget that the PGA Tour-backed new league TGL was also launched on January 7, and it has been a massive success. It became the most watched sporting event according to Zoomph, going up to 3.2 million views. Do you think after such a huge success, there will still be a merger?
