Is Greg Norman the hero golf needs, or just a troublemaker stirring the pot?

We have been witnessing the rivalry between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf since the latter’s inception. In hopes of ending it, the officials are ready to proceed with the merger. But since the idea of this $3 billion deal, there has been nothing but updates. Amidst all that, Greg Norman is here with an update that might affect Jay Monahan in a way.

About two weeks ago, updates emerged from Bloomberg regarding a meeting between PIF representatives and the PGA Tour, during which they discussed the financial aspects and issues complicating the merger. As per updates, it was stated that PIF wants more of an international approach, whereas PGA Tour pros are not actually in its favor.

If it continues to happen, the PGA Tour’s unwillingness might force the Saudis to step back, as the source said, “One worry is that the Saudis walk away, refocus on growing LIV, and luring more PGA players. PIF is pulling back from major deals unless the transactions are structured with a significant domestic element, the people added.”

After this, Yasir Al-Rumayyan also supported PIF’s LIV Golf as he attended the LIV Golf Team Championship last week, as revealed on the People Newspapers website. Greg Norman is also doing the same as Al-Rumayyan. The Shark recently attended Newcastle United’s football match, and apparently, Al-Rumayyan is the club’s chairman. Interestingly, it’s been 10 years since he went to any stadium to enjoy a match. Norman shared a post on Instagram captioned “Decades since a match. @nufc now a fan of this incredible team/city energy!” wearing a wide smile on his face.

A month ago, Jay Monahan discussed his plan for the 2025 season. Yes, there were some interesting updates to look forward to, like modernized broadcast, but there is also a disappointing one. The PGA Tour-PIF deal won’t reach its conclusion in 2025 either, as they are expecting the talks to continue for even longer.

While talking about it, Jay Monahan also added, “These conversations are complex. They’re going to take time. They have taken time, and they will continue to take time.” If it happens, the Saudis might likely walk away, making the long-awaited $3B deal more complex. However, that’s not the only disappointing update Monahan is hit with.

PGA Tour’s sponsors are at risk?

Last year fans enjoyed the Netflix Cup, where the PGA Tour entered the live sports arena, and it coincided with F1’s debut in Las Vegas. What’s more special about it was that it featured two F1 drivers, Carlos Sainz and Pierre Gasly, and PGA Tour pros Justin Thomas and Max Homa. They engaged in a mixed-format match, which attracted a lot of crowds and 700,000 views across. However, it’s not happening this year.

The Sports Business Journal shared an update revealing that the PGA Tour and Netflix won’t team up for the 2024 edition. They didn’t mention the reason behind the decision, as many expected it to happen again thanks to the crowd it drew. Not only that, RBC also signed one-year contracts instead of long-term deals, as the Tour still hasn’t finalized their merger talks.

What do you think Jay Monahan will do about these concerns? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
