May 22 is the day the golf world will get its second major championship winner of the season. And all the golfers, who made the cut, will compete for the one last time on Sunday to secure a high position on the leaderboard, everyone except Tiger Woods. 

The 15-time major champion withdrew from the tournament after round 3, following the visible pain he faced. Nonetheless, Woods only withdrew after the round was over and played until it ended. His effort to play in the event while facing the pain impressed a lot, including Paige Spiranac

The retired professional golfer turned social media influencer used her Twitter to show respect to the GOAT. 

It has been only a little more than a month since Woods had made a comeback. His death-defying accident in 2021 had made him take time away from the sport as it had caused severe injuries to his leg. Woods made his return at the 2022 Masters, despite not having a fully functioned leg.  

Notably, the golfer finished all 4 rounds at the Augusta National. And coming into the Southern Hills, Woods was positive that he would do better than the Masters. “It’s better than last time I played a tournament,” he said in the press meet before the PGA Championship.

Nevertheless, Woods faced more problems than the Masters. The golfer was visibly limping in round 1 and made his playing partner Rory McIlroy worry for him. He scored a 74 in the first round, whereas 69 and 79 in the second and third. 

Notably, it was the first time Woods had withdrawn from a major championship since he turned professional. 

Tiger Woods’ victory at the Southern Hills

Tiger Woods won his fourth PGA Championship in 2007. Although he has won three others, it was the first time he won the event at the Southern Hills.

The golfer established his dominance on the field from the second round, in which he scored a 63. The score is tied for the lowest single round at a major on the men’s tour. 

Notably, the 2007 PGA Championship was the second time he defended the title, the first one being in 2000. It has been 15 years since his 2007 victory. Yet, the golf world and Southern Hills remember it like it was yesterday.

Woods withdrew from the PGA Championship. However, he did make the cut, even while suffering from excruciating pain. That itself is an achievement.
