The 2024 edition of the Genesis Invitational is truly revolutionary. From having some of the world’s finest talents on its course, to providing tempting cash prizes, the event at Riviera Golf Course is all set to leave no space for disappointment.

Interestingly, the domino effect created by the star-studded event will not limit itself to its own course, it is also set to influence the Official Golf World Rankings (also known as OWGR) significantly. But how will the result of the Genesis Invitational impact the global golf standings to an extent worth noting?

Riviera triumph to transform current OWGR standings?

Apart from the $4 million winner’s payout and the 700 FedEx Cup points, the winner of the 2024 Genesis Invitational will also have a fair shot at changing the narrative of their OWGR standings. Why so?

Well, this is because of the 68.54 OWGR points that the winner will receive aside from the aforementioned incentives. Take, Rory McIlroy, for instance.

If the Northern Irishman wins the PGAT event and the current defending champion, Scottie Scheffler, fails to secure his title and does not even finish in second place (solo or tied 2-way, or 3-way), then McIlroy will have a fair shot to jump to the world no. 1 position and replace Scheffler from the top of the current OWGR ranking.

If we take the case of Tiger Woods, who faced the consequences of his prolonged hiatus and saw his all-time low of World No. 1328, a win at Riviera would change the trajectory of his present golf world standing.

Currently stationed at rank 893, the Golf World Hall of Fame member has a chance to climb over 800 positions up the ladder and position himself “as high as #54.”

But what about the rest of the 22 out of the top 24 golfers, as per the OWGR, who are also part of the field?

How will a win translate for other top-ranked golfers?

A win at the event with a field rating of 322.91 would obviously be the most preferred option for those who want to jump the OWGR ladders. However, even securing a place in the top ten is not a bad idea, considering the points at stake.

For example, Viktor Hovland has the potential to reach one rank up to World No. 3; whereas, Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark, and Patrick Cantlay, all have the potential to eye the 4th rank.

Further, Max Homa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Brian Harman, and Ludvig Aberg can jump to 5th place.
