Crowds bring energy and support to the game of golf, just like any other sport. While some characteristics like prize money, and venue do constitute among attractive features of an event, it is the on-course enthusiasts who hype the air with their loud cheers. Something similar was witnessed on the greens at Olympia Fields North Course over the course of the last four days.

The $20 million event founds its winner in the form of the course record holder Viktor Hovland. The performance of the Norwegian golfer was exceptionally awe-inspiring. An execution of this level deserves a buzz of similar valor. And that is exactly what was delivered by the Illinois crowd. With that, let us look at the notable difference between the bustle at the BMW Championship and the US Open this season!

The BMW Championship, with its ruthless competition, demanded full attention from everyone around. It has been an experience of a lifetime, and the credit does not only lie with the professionals. It is also the presence of the golf fans and spectators that has drawn the eyes toward it.

In an hours-old tweet by Daniel Rapaport, a Golf Digest writer, an astonishing picture from the latest PGA Tour event has come up. The golf course can be seen filled with the viewers and it surely seems like a sight for sore eyes.? The stands and the area behind the ropes were completely packed.

The audience even can be seen fully focused on the experience of witnessing such a high level of the game. The energy of the crowd could easily be sensed even from the still capture, conveying the fervor of each one present there. The tweet included a caption highlighting the same as well, reading, “The BMW should never leave Chicago.”

It revealed how amazing the Chicago crowd had been to the game of golf, hosting it with utter passion and enthusiasm. Though, the positive presence at the days-old tournament also demanded a recollection of the unimpressive crowd at the 2023 US Open. While the golfers at the Major tournament had not disappointed with their gameplay, the same could hardly be said about the lack of viewers.

Dave Portnoy, back in June, had commented on the limited seats being nothing but just “disgusting” for the game. Other golfers and golf enthusiasts seemed in full agreement with the comment. Tom Kim, who had grabbed a Top 10 finish in the tournament, was also among the critics.

He had rather honestly mentioned, “I think they restricted the people to 20,000 people. Man, I would have loved to see this place packed”. Hence, it did come as a surprise when the BMW Championship’s attendance drew out a similar comparison. Additionally, most golf fanatics appeared to agree with Rapaport and his tweet.

Olympia Fields’ astonishing crowd makes the golf world call it a ‘great sports city’

Arguably, good cheer is loved by the sports entities. However, looking at the recent tweet from the packed Olympia Fields, it appears that an energetic crowd is loved by fans as well. Commenting on the vibe resonated by these eager bystanders, the online audience couldn’t hold back but call the venue a “great sports city“.

One fan, in particular, couldn’t stop himself from making the comparison with the LACC golf course, venue for the US Open.

Others couldn’t help but voice their frustration because of the lack of events that take place on the course and in the vibrant city.

This, however, encouraged other golf lovers to pour in their love for the tournament, players, and the overall atmosphere of the $20 million event.

Additionally, the enthusiastic crowd motivated a fan to put forth his suggestion, hoping the PGA Tour would pay heed.

Amidst this wave of support for the Olympia Fields, a couple of golf enthusiasts did not agree with Dan Rapaport’s sentiments as they commented:
