Rickie Fowler’s fifth PGA Tour win came on February 3, 2019, when he lifted the WM Phoenix Open trophy. 1610 days after the feat, Fowler was able to get back to his winning ways yet again at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. So, what is his next big goal?
“One of the end goals was to be a part of the Ryder Cup team, and that’s still what we’re focusing on right now,” he said resolutely in response to a question from a PGA Tour rep on Sunday. “I’ve been a part of a handful, and that’s—they’re very special weeks, so that’s where I have kind of my eyes.” Since playing his first Ryder Cup in 2010, the golfer has missed out on the tournament just twice, in 2012 and 2021.
Fowler’s win in Detroit has now moved him into the top-12 of the Team USA standings. However, he will have to put in the work to secure one of the six automatic qualification slots. Otherwise, the golfer will have to rely on a captain’s pick to appear in the biennial event later this year.
Fowler’s current form has definitely made him a huge favorite for the Ryder Cup. In fact, his resurgence has been a long time coming. Before Sunday’s win, the 35-year-old had finished in the top-15 in six of his last seven starts, which also included a T5 finish at the US Open.

Fowler shot a 4-under 68 in the final round to tie for first place on the leaderboard. On the first playoff hole, he made an impressive 11-foot birdie. Meanwhile, both Morikawa and Hadwin parred the holes. This was also the third time that the Southern California native had won a PGA Tour event in a playoff.
Thanks to his win, Fowler took home $1,584,000 in winnings, which is 18% of the $8,800,000 prize purse. Runners-up Morikawa and Hadwin walked away with $783,200 each. The PGA Tour will next move to TPC Deere in Illinois for the upcoming John Deere Classic.
