Are Michelle Wie West, Rickie Fowler, and John Daly truly overrated, or are fans being too harsh?

Merriam-Webster defines overrated as being “rated or valued too highly”. Couple that definition with the sport of golf and the fans will have a lot of opinions about whom to dub the same. Well, look no more for the community did exactly that as they took to answer a question posed by a follower on the internet, all the while taking jabs at Michelle Wie West, Rickie Fowler, and John Daly!

A user named PrincessBananas85 shared a query on the golfing subreddit, r/ProGolf. They asked the honest response of the fans while posing the question; “Who Is The Most Overrated Golfer Of All Time In Your Honest Opinion? It can be Female and Male Golfers.” And in just a couple of hours, a lot of people flocked to the comment section to share their reactions.

Although a lot of golfers have emerged over the years, only a few were expected to become greats. And out of them, only a handful were able to not disappoint. But then again, with standards for becoming a legend set at the likes of Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, or Sam Snead, it’s not a surprise that many fail to meet the same.

Michelle Wie West, back when she was young, was compared to a lot to the legend of the game, Tiger Woods. Many followed suit and drew a parallel, owing to how she burst into the scene and the style with which she played the sport. But as fate would have it, a series of injuries sidetracked her career, and she found happiness away from the sport while carding just 5 wins on the LPGA Tour, including a major.

And consequently, a couple of followers took her name alongside Tommy Fleetwood as they replied to the query: “Michelle Wie. Also as much as it hurts me, the fact that Tommy Fleetwood has zero PGA tour wins is insane…” Although a fan did try to support the golfer while commenting how “she won a major,” the enthusiast was quickly shot down by another as they replied, “Which feels like a massive underachievement given her hype. Not hating on her, but her trajectory at 15 compared to where she ended when she retired is night and day.”

Meanwhile, a fan couldn’t help but express their frustration when Rory McIlroy’s name came as a response to the question. “Rory has 4 majors what a preposterous opinion,” said the enthusiast, before pointing out another golfer, “It’s someone like Rickie Fowler.” Even though the athlete boasts 10 wins on the PGA Tour, including a PLAYERS Championship back in 2015, many could only remember him through the quirky dresses he wore on the course and his athletic wife, Allison Stokke, who was a former pole vaulter. “Rickie Fowler. I like the guy… But man, he is better known for his attire and his wife than his golf achievements.” Interestingly, back at the 2024 Genesis Scottish Open, the athlete had even earned a lot of admiration for his dress.

What’s your perspective on:

Are Michelle Wie West, Rickie Fowler, and John Daly truly overrated, or are fans being too harsh?

Have an interesting take?

Even the likes of John Daly, alongside Anthony Kim and Fowler, were mentioned as responses to the question. “John Daly 100 percent followed closely by Anthony Kim then Rickie Fowler.” Although Daly himself boasts 5 wins on the PGA Tour, the enthusiast was brutal in letting the community know their thoughts. Over the years, the senior pro hasn’t managed to emerge victorious on any circuit except the PNC Championship with his son back in 2021. His cigarette-smoking side which the fans love, didn’t seem to help either. He was still dubbed ‘overrated’.

Meanwhile, Kim, on the other hand, seems to have made the list owing to him being compared to Tiger Woods back when he was playing good golf, before taking a long break from the game. And now, the athlete is back on LIV Golf all the while trying to clinch a win at the same. What do you think? Do you feel like the names said above belong to the list?
