Jon Rahm’s move, if it happens, would be finalized at a crucial juncture in the history of golf. With the December 31 deadline fast approaching, the PGA Tour is under a compulsion. It has to take a call on the future of the proposed merger with LIV Golf really soon. Under these circumstances, Rahm’s $600 million move would surely spice things up.

Let’s ponder the impact this move will have on the PGAT, the LIV Golf League, and the strained rapport between the two camps that is hanging by the thread.

Impact on PGAT

As the rumor about Rahm’s move to LIV got stronger, another tangent to the rumor came up. The claim that Jon Rahm would want to captain his own team and wouldn’t prefer being one of the captains. Considering that happens, it would mean that Rahm would recruit three more players to the league.

LIV could poach these new players from the PGAT/DP World Tour for all we know. This recruitment spree could attract more than just three players. The tour is in danger of losing more talents to the Saudi-funded league.

Impact on LIV

The drama that would unfold in the LIV camp with Rahm’s entry would make a world’s difference for the league. LIV already has a great bunch of legends like Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, and Sergio Garcia, and younger talents like Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Cam Smith, and Talor Gooch to name a few.

With arguably the world’s third-best contemporary golfer stepping into the mix, the competitive energy of the league would spike up. This is very likely to translate to amped-up viewership as well.

Impact on the PGAT-LIV relationship

If the merger comes through, and the two sides come up with amicable terms then that is a different story altogether. However, in case the ongoing tensions prevail for a while, then it could result in harsh actions from the side of the PGAT. The tour might slap fines and restrictions on Rahm and others who might defect to the LIV league. This could naturally spike the intensity of the conflict between the two sides.
