While a player going out of form or having a fallout is a different kind of setback, the current Ryder Cup has faced a new issue. Some integral members of the teams have been left out despite their eligibility due to the LIV golf fiasco.
The European team this year would not be playing with Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter for the same reason. Speaking in a recent press conference, Jon Rahm mentioned how the team is going to these LIV stars this week. He also spoke about his efforts to somehow include them in the process.

During a pre-tournament press conference at Marco Simone, Jon Rahm faced a question about Sergio Garcia. Rahm had spoken a lot about Garcia and his contribution to the team. The question focused on whether there had been any communication between the two regarding the upcoming Ryder Cup.
Jon Rahm confirmed that he did talk to him and asked him for advice. Rahm recalled how Garcia had been a mentor in earlier Ryder Cups. “He did show me a lot of what to do at Whistling and obviously in Paris, as well.”
Rahm mentioned that he had a conversation with Ian Poulter as well. He went on to admit that it wasn’t going to be easy to do without them. To replace their roles both on and off the golf course would be difficult, Rahm feels. But he added that it felt reassuring to discuss things with them and explore their opinions and ideas.
In any sport, playing together as a team isn’t just about talent and character; it’s mainly about team-building. Spending time together and working out a rapport is a key part of a team coming together as one unit. And when such teams split apart, it can be quite sad and chaotic.
Jon Rahm had opened up about how regretful the decision is to not have Sergio Garcia on the team. He spoke quite intensely on the matter.

After it was settled that LIV golfers wouldn’t be a part of the Ryder Cup Europe team, it was Jon Rahm who got quite agitated by the fact. He spoke about how arguably the greatest players in Europe can’t be excluded from the biggest event in the golf world.
He spoke about how the Europeans always had an iconic Spanish duo on the team. Rahm and Garcia showed their peak chemistry when they won all three paired matches in the 2021 Ryder Cup. It was evident Rahm was severely taken aback by the decision. He didn’t dilute his disappointment, and he spoke his mind boldly when the opportunity presented itself.
Rahm insisted that politics should not limit the scope of the sport. Ian Poulter appreciated Rahm for his clarity of thought and being able to keep politics and sports apart.
