Rory McIlroy does a 180 yet again. The Northern Irishman is currently gearing up for his first appearance of 2024 on the PGA Tour calendar. But, while doing so, it seems he has showcased his support for LIV Golf and its professionals once again as the golfer was spotted portraying a complete U-turn regarding his opinions. Interestingly, this time around, he has advocated for a return of the defectors to the men’s circuit despite a fellow PGA Tour Pro, Tyrrell Hatton’s, decision to withdraw from the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am!

A tweet was shared by Flushing It on X (previously known as Twitter) quoting McIlroy, “Let them come back… I don’t think there should be a punishment [for LIV players wanting to return to the PGA Tour].” Adding on, the news handle also mentioned how “his u-turn has come real quick,” all the while dubbing it as nothing short of “awesome.”

Rory McIlroy changes his stance on LIV Golf yet again

The 34-year-old, who was known for being a staunch loyalist, had earlier, during a podcast, expressed regret on how judgemental he had been against the players on the LIV circuit. Well, it appears he hasn’t changed his opinions on the same even though Hatton defected to the same ahead of the second signature event of 2024, leading to Hayden Buckley taking his place on the field.

Continuing with his support for the Saudi-backed league and its athletes, the 4X major champ pointed out how “life is about choices,” while alluding to both the professionals who defected and stayed on the PGA Tour. He expressed his firm belief in allowing them to come back if they are still “eligible” to play on the circuit and has a drive to do the same. A complete 180 on what he used to say back in the day!

Moreover, he also divulged the reason behind his turning softie yet again. The 2X PGA Championship winner disclosed how he has changed his tune on the same owing to the current situation of the sport. “I see where golf is,” said the Northern Irishman as  he confessed his reasons before continuing, “I see that having a diminished PGA TOUR and having a diminished LIV Tour or anything else is bad for both parties.” Adding on, he also highlighted how it would be “much better” moving forward together for the “good of the game.”

Well, the golfer has now become a prime example of how people can change over time. The athlete, who was once against the defectors playing on either of the circuits has come forward to change his stance on the same. Nevertheless, how would these comments made by the current world No.2 end up affecting the golf world? One can only wait and see!
