Did Rickie Fowler's family break cost him his edge, or is JT Poston just on fire?

Rickie Fowler sure has a friend in JT Poston. Don’t get us wrong. We were just hinting at how the two golfers took a break from the sport of golf, much like each other. While the former did so for about 2.5 months, the latter took some time off for 2 months. However, the hiatus seems to have worked much better for one person than the other. Who? Well, for the 31-year-old Poston who returned with a scintillating start to the Shriners Children’s Open!

The 2-time PGA Tour champ was leading the scoreboard at the FedEx Fall event after the second day. He has managed to put up a score of 13-under overall after carding figures of 64-65 at the par-71 course, TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. Fowler, on the other hand, didn’t appear to be having the best of tournaments as he was placed T24 after Saturday’s play with a figure of 10-under overall.

Coming back to the hiatus, JT Poston was asked about it in an interview at the Shriners Children’s Open. “What did you do in the time off to kind of reset?” asked a reporter to which he swiftly replied, “Exactly that. Just sort of reset. Put the clubs away for several weeks, which was nice. That’s the benefit of having that much time off. I can kind of put them away and get the rest that I need and then have plenty of time to gear up for this week.” And gear up, he did. Truly an impressive performance that the pro has carded at the Tour’s Fall event.

The golfer had decided to take some time off the sport after the T33 finish he carded at the 2024 BMW Championship back in August. Unfortunately, the athlete could only dish out a score of 1 over par overall owing to figures of 70-74-70-75 that he managed to put up after four days of play. What’s more, he failed to leave a mark at the event, causing him to not be able to increase the total top 10 finishes from 4 to 5 in 2024 through the FedEx Cup playoff at Castle Pines Golf Club.

That explains why he had to take the ‘reset’. Now, onto the ‘how’ part. “We spent some time with some family,” disclosed JT Poston as he added how they took a nice long vacation in the mountains with her 6-month-old daughter, Katherine “Scottie” Poston. “Yeah, just honestly spent a lot of time at home. We’ve got a six-month-old at home so just been chasing her around.” So… family time, huh? There’s another thing that he might have in common with Rickie Fowler!

Rickie Fowler also took a break just like Poston and it was for family

“My Family!!” wrote the 35-year-old athlete on an Instagram post welcoming his newborn baby girl. “Right where I’m supposed to be. Welcome to the crew Nellie.” Yes, he and his wife welcomed their second child back in August while he was on hiatus after the T71 finish at the final major of the year, the Open Championship.

Did Rickie Fowler's family break cost him his edge, or is JT Poston just on fire?

Have an interesting take?

There were many speculations surrounding the PGA Tour Pro not playing any more tournaments after the forgettable Royal Troon experience owing to the birth of his baby. But all of the worries by his fans were for naught as he teed off at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Although Fowler did not get the comeback he hoped for with a T16, it was his best finish of the year.

Even so, he has his priorities set out for the future. He came out candid on his plans after taking the 2.5-month break; “You know, be nice to be able to have a major,” said the Pro, “if not multiple, on the resume by the time I’m done with this.” But will he be able to do it? That, interestingly, is a question only he can answer. Fingers crossed!
