Did missing $20 million make Jordan Spieth a better golfer? What do you think?

A T66 on the FedEx Cup standings! Jordan Spieth would have surely wanted to finish better. But alas! A figure of 795.100 points on the leaderboard following the FedEx St. Jude Championships can only card him so much. Consequently, this has also caused him to miss out on the upcoming playoff at Castle Pines Golf Club, the 2024 BMW Championship. However, this might turn out to be a good thing for the PGA Tour Pro. The reason? His wrist injury.

“I’ve got to have it operated on ASAP,” divulged the golfer while alluding to the wrist surgery he is planning on getting. Spieth also gave a vague outline of his future plans as he said, “And then I’ll go through the process of what I’m supposed to do from there.” It appears the athlete will focus on his recovery going forward as he also added, “If I don’t have a reason to try to rush back—which I don’t—I’ll probably just take it as slow as I can.”

What exactly happened to his hand? The 31-year-old has been suffering from the same wrist injury for a while now. Back at the 2024 RBC Heritage, he was even forced to consider withdrawing from the event after the first round of the tournament following the aggravation of the injury. Regardless, he managed to finish the contest at T39, despite the setback.

It all started at the 2023 PGA Championship when the golfer suffered an ulnar nerve injury on his left wrist. As a result, the sub-sheath of the extensor tendon on the backside of his wrist was torn, partially subsequently causing the dislocation of the ECU tendon at times. This, in turn, leads to much pain and discomfort.

“It’s a come-and-go thing,” disclosed Jordan Spieth while alluding to the injury during the 2024 PGA Championship, “I could oddly enough twist in the wrong way getting off the ground, and I couldn’t play tomorrow. But I could play the next day.” And unfortunately enough, the 3-time major champ experienced the same pain recurring once again as he reached the 14th hole at Valhalla. “I thought I was done for the week,” confessed Spieth as the tendon popped and went back in during the event. Looking back, one can’t help but notice how his performances have taken a hit owing to the same.

Have an interesting take?

The 13-time PGA Tour champ entered 2024 at No. 15 on the OWGR. However, a dismal season, brought about by the decline in form due to the injury, has forced him to go down on the rankings, to as low as No. 43 at the moment. From the 22 events he played this season, Jordan Spieth has raked in only a total of 3 top-10 finishes while making the cut 14 times.

His best in 2024 came from the first event he teed off in at the Sentry when the athlete carded a 27-under to finish 3rd. He registered figures of 66-67-67-65 over the four days of play to finish just two strokes shy of the champion, Chris Kirk. Meanwhile, coming down to his final event before the surgery, the American finished at T68, owing to his figures of 9-over par that came about from a 68-75-74-72 throughout the tournament.

His fans would surely want the golfer to come out victorious once again on the Tour. And for him to do that, Jordan Spieth will have to focus on his recovery, now more so than ever.
