J.J. Spaun has been a prominent figure in the golfing circuit since he turned professional in the year 2012. The 2022 Valero Texas Open winner opened his 2025 PGA Tour season with a strong showing. He’s leading the top in the Sony Open in Hawaii after three rounds with a score of 13 under par. Well, such an impressive result needs an impressive arsenal to back it up. Let’s take a look at the equipment that has aided the Los Angeles native’s bid for his second PGA Tour victory.

J.J. Spaun’s Weapons of Choice

One of his standout changes in the Sony Open was his Srixon ZXi7 irons, which cost approximately $1320. This was his first start with the new set of irons, and it has been incredible in giving him an advantage on the field. The golfing ecosystem was quick to see the change in both his bag as well as his performance on the field.

The ZXi7 irons are different from his usual weapon of choice, which was the Srixon ZX7 4-PW combined with a True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 as a shaft. This was his standard and was pretty significant in his victory in the Valero Texas Open in April 2022.

Spaun has a variety of clubs from different makers in his bag. Like an assortment of candies during Christmas. The American uses a G425 LST Driver from Ping a change from his former Paradym Triple Diamond Model from Callaway. The shaft in this case is a Fujikura Ventus Black 6X. The G425 LST costs around $499 and is symmetrical and has a rounded, less triangular shape. It is smaller compared to the G425 Max which allows it to have a lower spin. It has a strong sound of impact that compliments the feel very well and is very stable. The stability does not compromise the forgiveness offering a good range for a pro-golfer.

For the 3-wood he uses a TaylorMade SIM, and for the 5-wood he uses a Callaway Mavrik. The Mitsubishi Tensei CK Orange 70TX shaft is used with the former while a Mitsubishi Diamana BF 80TX shaft is used with the 5-wood.

The TaylorMade SIM’s key feature is the control it offers in either direction. Its adaptability makes it a favorite amongst both pros and amateurs. Along with the workability it offers, it also offers good distance but it compromises on the launch angle at times. It costs around $300.

The 5-wood Spaun uses costs around $200. The Mavrik compensates for the 3-wood by offering a high launch if necessary. It is built for a large and expansive hitting area.

The wedge in his bag is an RTX Zip Core from Cleveland. Spaun uses a True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shaft with it. One of the best all-around wedges in the market, its overall quality in terms of spin, control, and feel is exemplary. The soft feel does not compromise on the stability and the overall look is classy. The grooves allow for great control of the spin but it is not the most forgiving wedge in business. At $120 it is undoubtedly a great addition to the bag.

Spaun’s putter is a Titleist Newport 2 GSS (Scotty Cameron Prototype) made from German stainless steel. The putter is used strictly by the best players in the world and has a reputation associated with success. It has a different shape compared to the platinum series Newport 2. It is wider and has more rounded weight bumps leading down from the back flange. This gives the putter a softer appearance, priced at $449

And to cap it off, the San Diego State alum uses Z-Star Diamonds from Srixon as his go-to golf ball. The Z-Star balls have modified cores to enhance performance and mutate according to need. The Diamond version is firmer than the Z-Star, allowing for distance and iron spin control. The Diamond also has an average compression of 91. It has been used by several pros like Keegan Bradley, Brooks Koepka, and Taylor Pendrith, to name a few. Priced at $44.99

The 34-year-old uses PUMA Apparel, accessories, and footwear while on the course. His preferred shoe is the spikeless IGNITE Elevate 2 shoes. Costing $130 it is designed for comfort and stability and is also waterproof. The good traction also provides a considerable amount of friction while swinging the club.

The arsenal looks as impressive as his performances. As the famous Rasheed Ogunlaru said, “All the tools, techniques, and technology in the world are nothing without the head, heart, and hands to use them wisely, kindly, and mindfully.
