For Zach Johnson, captain of Team US for the impending Ryder Cup in Rome, a big issue has risen up in the form of Justin Thomas. On one hand, the former World No. 1 and two-time major winner boasts an incredible Ryder Cup record, with six and a-half points out of a possible nine. But, on the other hand, Thomas’ current slump has seen him put up disastrous displays in most of his outings this year.

He is currently stationed in Blaine, Minnesota, for the 2023 edition of the 3M Open. But misfortune looms large over the 30-year-old yet again as he attempts to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs and boost his Ryder Cup chances!

Out to the cut at the Masters, the US Open, and recently, at the Open, Justin Thomas descended upon the TPC Twin Cities course this week with hopes of turning his form around. But his performance at the Minnesota venue has not been anything to write home about.

After a first-round 2-under 69, Thomas carded an even-par 71 on Friday, missing the cut by one shot. This means that the golfer will walk away empty-handed from the event in terms of points.

An impressive outing at the ongoing 3M Open would have helped Thomas surge up the FedEx Cup standings and enter the top 70. It could have also aided him in proving a point to Zach Johnson, the captain of the American squad for the 2023 Ryder Cup.

Justin Thomas’ second round at the 3M Open was a nail-biting one for fans. On his ninth hole of the day (No. 18 at TPC Twin Cities), the PGA Tour pro hit two balls into the water, making a double bogey. He made another double on the par-3 fourth before carding three straight birdies in a row. But it wasn’t enough to put him inside the cutline.

Thomas’ current form has led many in the golf community to accept the bleak reality that he may, in fact, not appear in Rome this year.

Thomas’ last victory came at the 2022 PGA Championship, which was also his second major trophy. Despite his winless streak, many fans are hopeful that the Louisville native will bounce back in no time.
