The 2022 PGA Championship, the second major of the year, is set to begin on May 19th. There is almost a month left before the event. Yet, the golf world is already talking about it as they are curious whether Phil Mickelson would attend it to defend his title or not. 

According to a Twitter post, the officials are to release the final field of the PGA Championship on Monday.

Mickelson had won the 2021 edition of the tournament. He scored an overall score of 6-under and won his 6th major title with a 2-shot lead over Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. 

He won his second PGA Championship title at the age of 50, thus making him the oldest to win a major. Furthermore, Mickelson became the lowest ranking member to win a major. He was ranked at 115 on the OWGR standings when he won the event.

Since he is the defending champion, Mickelson should be playing at the Southern Hills this year. However, his controversial comments regarding the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed League have made him take a long break from participating in any events. 

Mickelson had called out the PGA Tour for their “obnoxious greed.” Although he supported the Saudi- League at first, a phone interview with him revealed his thoughts about the League. Mickelson said in the interview, “They’re (Saudi- League) scary m****erf**kers to get involved with.”

After the interview got published online, the golfer publicly apologized for his actions. Furthermore, Mickelson indicated he would be taking a break from the events for a while. He still hasn’t returned to play in a tournament ever since.

Will Phil Mickelson play at the Southern Hills for the second major of the year? 

True to his words, Mickelson hasn’t attended a single event since his controversial comments. He didn’t even take part in the Masters Tournament this year.

The golf fans thought that the PGA Tour had suspended him from the tournaments because of his comments. However, according to the Chairman of Augusta National, the golfer chose not to attend the event on his own. The Chairman explained that Mickelson informed him decision via a text message. 

Moreover, according to another source, Mickelson and Tiger Woods had already submitted their application for the US Open

The golfer didn’t attend the Masters Tournament this year. However, he is considering competing in the Open Championship. It doesn’t confirm whether he would play at the PGA Championship or not. Nevertheless, since Mickelson is the defending champion, it would be the perfect event to make his comeback.
