Who would have thought that the final signature event of the 2024 season would turn out like this? The Travelers Championship was hit with nothing short of a setback, all thanks to its biggest nemesis on Saturday, leading to it being suspended at 3.30 P.M. ET. Even though the event on the Jay Monahan-led PGA Tour did resume later at 6.20 P.M. ET, the unfavorable weather conditions left a mark on the tournament, all the while posing a danger to many people on the course.

The piece of news was shared by NUCLR GOLF on their X handle. The post mentioned how “2 People on site were reportedly struck by lightning at TPC River Highlands, both conscious and transported to hospital.” The tweet then urged “Everyone out there” to “stay safe” until further news.

Although the final elevated event of the season started without any problems on Thursday, the same cannot be said for the tourney at the moment. Especially after the second round, which was also halted due to unfavorable weather. Now, talking about Moving Day, even the weather forecast predicted dark clouds hovering over the course of Connecticut with a 20% chance of precipitation and a 10% chance of lightning. The report also forecasted the real problem to start by around noon with a 20% chance of pop-up showers or thunderstorms, which would, later on, slowly grow to 50%.

The round did, interestingly, resume later on at TPC River Highlands. Moreover, the third day of play saw Tom Kim leading the scorecard at T1, with overall figures of 18-under, followed by the likes of Akshay Bhatia and Scottie Scheffler tied at T2. However, the fans were more focused on the unfortunate events that took place at the course all the while expressing their dissatisfaction with the Jay Monahan-led circuit in the comments.

Netizens take turns to bash the Jay Monahan-led PGA Tour

Back in 2019, a total of six people were injured at the TOUR Championship when lightning struck a 60-foot pine on the third day of play. They were reportedly taking cover from the rain, leading them to get showered on by the debris from the top of the tree off the 16th tee. A similar case happened this time around, as well as the bolt striking a tree near a home, north of the 15th greens, along the course hosting the event. A couple of fans, however, took up the opportunity to cuss out the Monahan-led circuit while commenting, “Irresponsible to ever have PGA tour stops in New England again,”

Even the 2024 PGA Championship witnessed an unfortunate event as a man was hit by a shuttle bus in Louisville, on the morning of the second round of the major. The man, who was later identified as John Mills, a tournament worker, tragically died outside the Valhalla Golf Club. Another user on X, consequently, came forward to react: “Prayers to Everyone no one deserves to go to a golf tournament and not come home.”

There were a lot of instances this season where events were suspended due to unfavorable weather. Even the 2024 PGA Championship witnessed the second round getting halted, not to mention day 2 of the PLAYERS and the Valspar Championships. A follower couldn’t help but take a jab at the PGA Tour for their bad decisions to host the tournaments in these places as they commented, “The bad logistics and business decisions from the suits at Ponte Vedra continue,” while another pointed out, “2024 has been a wild year in golf and this just adds to it. Full Swing is gonna be must-see TV next season.” The 2-season Netflix show is an immersive documentary series following a diverse group of pro golfers on and off the course during the year of intense competition. What do you feel about the whole series of unfortunate events?
