ESPN’s Masters coverage witnessed Rory McIlroy’s dominance, as well as that of Bernhard Langer, in the final round. Viewers also heard golfer Jordan Spieth drop the f-bomb as he looked visibly frustrated on the 18th hole of the second round on Friday. “I mean that’s a full f—–g shot,” the golfer groaned. But what was missing? Bryson DeChambeau. Yes, he was barely visible despite shooting a 4-under 68 on Friday and then walking into Saturday in second place on the leaderboard. This reminded us about how back in 2023, Phil Mickelson’s incredible 8-under performance was barely featured, and networks like ESPN and CBS faced major criticism for what many called biased coverage.

Yes, it’s like déjà vu, but not in a good way. After an incredible second round that saw him shoot a four-under-par 68, DeChambeau sat comfortably at seven-under overall, just one shot behind leader Justin Rose. But what’s the point if the buildup was not covered properly? Easing the backlash, the official Masters account on X (formerly Twitter) shared a few highlights from DeChambeau’s second round. Still, it wasn’t nearly enough to satisfy die-hard golf fans who expected more from the broadcast. So why did this happen?

Back in 2020, he famously called the course a “par-67,” due to his towering drives, which didn’t sit well with many traditionalists. Since then, his relationship with the course and the media has been a bit strained. But that’s not all; There’s more! Fans complained online that the golfer’s thin coverage could have been done simply to overshadow LIV and its golfers. However, let us not forget that the PGA Tour has no control over the Masters or its coverage. Augusta National, Inc. manages the Masters and is known to have rigid demands when it comes to the event’s coverage. But with viewers continuing to question the coverage, PGA Tour insider Dan Rapaport stepped in with some context.

Taking to his X handle, he wrote: “Masters media remains undefeated. Saw people complaining online about not seeing Bryson in featured groups—despite being able to see all of his shots live on site on 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16 and immediately thereafter on the app—and posted a cut-down video of his ENTIRE round.”

But that hasn’t stopped the conversation from heating up. While DeChambeau was sidelined, Max Homa, who has had his share of struggles, including a wild shot that hit a caddie in round one, is getting plenty of on-air attention. The contrast hasn’t gone unnoticed, and fans are starting to question whether there’s more to the story.

Is it just a matter of broadcast logistics, or something deeper?

Lil Wayne questions Bryson DeChambeau’s coverage, or the lack of it!

Adding fuel to the fire, rapper Lil Wayne—an outspoken supporter of LIV Golf—also chimed in. “The Masters blew it w this lack of coverage on Bryson!!! They gotta stop hatin on the LIV sh-t. This man is killin’ it out there and I can’t watch,” he posted on X. However, minutes later, he posted another tweet which read:

“If ya having the same issue I was having then all ya gotta do is get the Masters App and follow whatever player u like!”

It’s hard not to see this as a deeper issue with the sport’s media, but regardless, DeChambeau is undoubtedly one of the most exciting players out there and made his ninth Masters start, and while he has never won the tournament, 2025 might give him that unique opportunity. After all, he has been playing well and even improved his pitching, chipping, and putting.

But Rory McIlroy is giving him some tough competition, and this battle will be worth watching. After all, ten months after defeating McIlroy in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, DeChambeau has yet another chance to show his dominance. And no, this isn’t PGA Tour versus LIV; It is simply the best golfers trying to get the prestigious win.
