Can Ludvig Åberg bounce back from this injury, or is this a career-defining setback?

He was 5th last week, and now he’s T16 on the season-long leaderboard. The Swedish pro, Ludvig Aberg, failed to finish strong at the 2024 TOUR Championship, resulting in his drop in the FedEx Cup standings. However, that seems to be the least of his worries at the moment, as a report has surfaced about the athlete undergoing surgery this week.

A tweet was shared by NUCLR GOLF on its X handle, mentioning that he will reportedly be undergoing a procedure to repair his torn meniscus. The post included a picture of the golfer alongside a report by Todd Lewis, a reporter at Golf Channel & NBC, stating that “Ludvig Aberg will have arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee that has bothered him since Spring.”

That’s not all. The journalist also mentioned that the golfer will only be able to play golf 3-4 weeks after the surgery. Even so, Lewis also noted that the Swedish athlete is “likely to play again in 2024 on a limited schedule,” to avoid putting too much pressure on the injured part of his knee. A torn meniscus can unfortunately cause pain, swelling, and stiffness, hindering knee movement.

Aberg had participated in a total of four tournaments after the end of the 2023 Regular PGA Tour season, the last of which was the RSM Classic, which he won. Although he might not participate in the 2024 FedEx Cup Fall season, there is a high chance that the golfer will look towards playing on the DP World Tour.

Despite the unfortunate finish at the 2024 TOUR Championship and the health concern, he has managed to outperform many in the field when it comes to top-10 finishes. Interestingly, Ludvig Aberg trails behind only two golfers, Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele (unsurprisingly!), while boasting 8 top-10 placements without a win in the 2024 PGA Tour season.

Have an interesting take?

The athlete started the 2024 PGA Tour season at the Sentry, where he finished T47 following his 2023 RSM Classic win. At that time, he had fallen from the 29th spot in the world rankings to the 30th position. However, a T9 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open soon propelled him up the ranks, as he followed it with a runner-up finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

A T8 at THE PLAYERS, T2 at the Masters, T10 at the RBC Heritage, T5 at the Memorial Tournament, T4 at the Genesis Scottish Open, and a T2 at the BMW Championship catapulted him to the top ranks. As a result, Ludvig Aberg jumped to the 4th spot and has been able to maintain his position with a total of 259.98882 points (as of the second FedEx Cup playoff at Castle Pines).

His fans would surely want the golfer to replicate the performance he delivered this year but with a win in the upcoming 2025 season. To achieve that, Ludvig Aberg will need proper rest and rehabilitation in the near future. Will he be able to make a proper comeback?
