The 2019 US Open champion announced on August 30 that he would be undergoing surgery to remove a lesion in his brain. While he knew about the lesion earlier, medication proved insufficient to treat it. This left many of his fans feeling down. Seeing the medicines were not working, Woodland promptly decided to opt for surgery.
But this was not an easy step to take. With the support of his fans and family, however, he progressed to the next stage. He said, “This journey has been very hard but I’m extremely thankful to be progressing and for the unconditional love and support from everyone.”
On September 19, Gary Woodland’s team reported that his surgery (performed on September 18) was a success, and a majority of the tumor was removed from his brain. However, he could not immediately return to the field and took four months to rejuvenate.
Now he is back in full health and will compete at the Wai’alae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii. However, his battle will not be an easy one as he will go against other 143 players to secure the trophy. But his can-do attitude will be the one to watch out for.
