"Is Rickie Fowler's triumph being overshadowed by the Rocket Mortgage Classic's generosity? What's more important?"

Good deeds are never wasted; they come back to you! This motto summarizes the spirit of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Its sixth-annual golf event started on June 27 and will end on June 30, at the historic Detroit Golf Club. The 2023 edition crowned Rickie Fowler with a $1.584 million prize after he triumphed over Adam Hadwin and Collin Morikawa in a playoff.

While Fowler’s attempt to retain his crown is noteworthy, the tournament’s charity initiative overshadowed his impressive achievement last year. But how did the Rocket Mortgage Classic achieve this feat?

In a remarkable display of generosity, the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic raised a staggering $1.6 million for charitable causes, surpassing Rickie Fowler’s winnings. This classic event has been a game-changer in the transformation of Detroit. It could be possible through its corporate sponsors, on-course programs, and various fundraising events. Since its inception in 2019, the tournament has raised over $8.4 million.

The significant donors from the corporate sector included Detroit-based Rocket Mortgage, a part of Rocket companies, which pledged a substantial amount to support local charities. Additionally, funds were raised through value-added programs such as the “Birdies for Charity” initiative, where players pledged a certain amount for each birdie made during the tournament.

Another impactful program aimed to connect AREA 313 residents with internet access, helping end the digital divide. This included a friendly 3-hole competition that generated donations for “Changing the Course” program. So when celebrity scramble golfers, or PGA Tour professionals, scored with an eagle on hole 14 or a birdie on hole 16, it generated a $2,500 donation, and a hole-in-one on hole 15 resulted in a $10,000 donation.

How does the Rocket Giving Fund allocate the funds raised?

From the $1.6 million, Connect 313, a collaborative partnership focused on bridging Detroit’s digital divide, received $581,400 of the proceeds. Additionally, $280,000 was distributed equally to Midnight Golf, the Detroit Police Athletic League, and First Tee Greater Detroit.

Moreover, $75,000 went to the Greater Palmer Park Community. A total of $888,105 was allocated to the “Golf & Give program”, and other charitable initiatives and non-cash donations. The RMC launched the “Golf & Give” program in May 2023, offering golf fans a unique way to support local NGOs. Through this initiative, $30 from each ground ticket purchased went directly to a designated non-profit organization.
