It was a close one, no doubt! Adam Scott was nearly out of the field for the upcoming major at Pinehurst, the 2024 U.S. Open. This, in turn, would have halted his exceptional streak of playing consecutively at the major championships to a figure of 92. But not to worry. A last-minute call-up has now ensured that his record continues, courtesy of none other than Grayson Murray.

Cam Davis defeated his fellow Australian golfer in a sudden-death playoff at the U.S. Open qualifier held last week at Springfield. This, in turn, caused Scott to come face to face with the danger of losing his spot at the upcoming event while waiting for the USGA to select him as an alternate. However, his worries were taken care of when the Association themselves stepped in, much to the golfer’s relief!

The United States Golf Association, just hours ago, announced its intention to remove the late golfer Murray from the event’s ranking criteria. It was done to prevent the tragic passing of the PGA Tour Pro from affecting any professional who could qualify via the OWGR. As per the standards set aside by the USGA, the top 60 on the world rankings by the deadline (June 10 in this case) will get an exemption into the field at the major tournament.

This, in turn, spells good news for Adam Scott, who will be able to reach a total of 94 consecutive major appearances by 2025. The 43-year-old has already been guaranteed a spot in the field at the Open Championship (his 93rd consecutive major) to be held at Royal Troon in July, all thanks to his T4 finish at the ISPS Handa Australian Open, part of The Open Qualifying Series Australia.

That’s not all. Being the winner of the 2013 Masters Tournament has also helped him guarantee his spot at the 2025 edition of the event to be held at Augusta National. This would mark Adam Scott’s 94th consecutive major appearance taking him a step closer to Jack Nicklaus’s record of teeing off in more than 100 straight majors, at a whopping figure 146. The legend is the only golfer to have claimed this exceptional feat.

The athlete’s achievement was almost in tatters, owing to Davis beating Adam Scott after three extra holes in the playoffs that were held at Springfield. This, however, wasn’t the only time when the 1-time major champ was in danger of breaking the streak!

Back in 2018, the then 37-year-old Scott fell outside the top 60 on the OWGR. He was, consequently, forced to play at the 36-hole qualifying in Columbus, Ohio in order to gain a spot on the U.S. Open field. The result? Well, he successfully earned himself a spot at the major championship which was to be hosted at Shinnecock thereby making his 68th straight major appearance.

Adam Scott kicked off his streak back in 2001 when he teed off at the Open Championship at Royal Lytham. It has now climbed to a whopping 92 and will soon reach 95. But if he is to reach Nicklaus, then the Aussie will have to qualify for the 2025 PGA Championship to keep the streak going. Will he be able to do it? The fans can only wait and watch!
