Is Tiger Woods's Sun Day Red a hit or just another overpriced brand missing the mark?

“The legacy grows October 11…” Many of you would have been curious when Tiger Woods and Sun Day Red dropped this tease on October 9. Well, buckle up your seatbelts, for the 15-time major champ’s brand finally dropped the reveal. However, contrary to his expectations, many in the community didn’t take it all too well. Not too well in the sense that they took to make fun of the apparel line’s latest development.

“For the first time, Sun Day Red is available to shop in person – exclusively at Pebble Beach,” divulged the company under a new post on its Instagram handle. “Tiger’s connection with Pebble Beach is significant, not only to him, but golf as a whole – and there’s no other place Sun Day Red would choose to have its first retail experience.” Yes, you read that right! The golfer’s brand made the iconic course the site for its first golf apparel pop-up shop.

Back in 2000, Woods was able to clinch his first of three U.S. Open titles at the grounds by carding a figure of 12-under. What’s more, he also won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am that year. Thirdly… his firm, TGR Design, reimagined the former site of the Peter Hay Golf Course to bring about The Hay, consisting of nine holes, all of which are par 3.  Interestingly, the 48-year-old sure does have a “significant” connection with the layout in California. But that alone wasn’t enough for the enthusiasts to give it an easy time just hours after its release.

Tiger Woods’s Sun Day Red fails to impress golf fans

While the 15-time major champ had sported only Nike, up until last year, before launching his new brand, Sun Day Red, his son, Charlie Woods’s choices haven’t been as consistent. The teenage athlete wore Greyson for the 2023 PNC Championship while donning a Titleist cap at the Lost Lake Golf Club (remember him teeing off at the pre-qualifier for the Cognizant Classic?).

A few months later, we spotted Woods Jr. wearing Nike, after which he wore SDR at the Adam Scott Junior Invitational, but with a ‘Titelist’ cap twist! And by July 31, when he clinched the South Florida Junior PGA Cup, the golfer’s son was spotted wearing a different brand. This inconsistency caused a fan to come forward and comment, “Has anyone ever seen anyone except Tiger wearing this stuff? His son doesn’t even wear it.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is Tiger Woods's Sun Day Red a hit or just another overpriced brand missing the mark?

Have an interesting take?

Back in June, a total of nine exclusive products were released by Sun Day Red on its website. The Nebula Hat, which promised guaranteed comforts, was $40, while the Bomber Jackets cost $225. In the Jupiter collection, which was released much later, one polo shirt from the same came to be priced at $120 while a ball marker was marked (pun intended) at $50. Now, imagine all of these in person at the Pebble Beach Golf Links. Guessed the reactions yet? It isn’t too hard, considering the criticism about the overpriced nature of the brand that it has raked in till now.

“You need a 2nd mortgage to enter the store,” commented a fan after taking a look at the prices that were on display at Tiger Woods’s brand’s first retail experience. A couple of other people also seemed to agree with the enthusiast’s jab as they came forward to respond, “I heard they do a credit check before you enter the store,” and “Too poor to even look at the photos.”

While many took to comment on the golfer’s brand, a certain follower on Instagram took to take a jab at his golf game. “Logo resembles his golf game. Emaciated,” wrote the fan under the recent post as they alluded to Tiger Woods’s run in 2024. The golfer had withdrawn from the 2024 Genesis Invitational before missing the cut in three majors and finishing T60 at Augusta National.

The last one sure was personal, to be honest! Anyhow, the legend of the sport wouldn’t have even remotely guessed such a reaction coming out from the community. Even so, the moment sure makes for an iconic one, especially since Tiger Woods shares quite a “significant” connection with the iconic course.
