The 2023 edition of the Genesis Scottish Open, jointly sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour, has gotten underway at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick. For years, the tournament has served as the final stop before the Open Championship, and it’s no different this time around, either.
The field for the Scottish Open is stacked this year, with eight of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) making an appearance. Golfers will not only be competing for an incredible winner’s payout, but the links set up will also help them warm up to links golf ahead of the impending major!

With a handful of days left to go for the Open at Hoylake, the biggest names in golf have descended upon Scotland for the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open. The tournament boasts a highly competitive 156-player field that will be headlined by the likes of Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, and Rory McIlroy.
Xander Schauffele emerged victorious at the tournament last year, besting Kurt Kitayama for his 7th PGA Tour title. Currently, the 29-year-old has set his eyes on successfully defending the title.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, had missed the cut at the Renaissance Club last year and will be vying for redemption this week. Meanwhile, 4-time major winner Rory McIlroy, has been in stellar form as well, finishing second at last month’s US Open. His best finish at the Scottish Open had come in 2014, wherein he had tied for the 14th position.
Rickie Fowler is one of the hottest players at the moment after winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic earlier this month. After taking a few days off, he is now back in action and is a heavy favorite as well! Patrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland, and Tommy Fleetwood are among the other players to watch out for this week.
A 72-hole event, the Scottish Open features the classic stroke-play format. A cut is made after 36 holes, following which the remaining players can continue to compete on the weekend. The golfer finishing with the lowest score will be then crowned the winner.
Total prize money and the winner’s payout
In 2022, the Scottish Open had a prize purse of $8 million, out of which winner Xander Schauffele took home $1.44 million. This year, the purse has been increased to $9 million! Per the PGA Tour, the winner will pocket $1.575 million in earnings this year!

The winner will also nab 500 FedEx Cup points. There are just six events left in the FedExCup Regular Season, which means the race is on for players to find a place inside the top 70 and qualify for the three-event FedExCup Playoffs. Additionally, the victorious golfer will also get valuable OWGR points!
