Is Matt McCarty the next big thing in golf after his stunning Black Desert Championship win?

He came. He saw. He conquered. What else can aptly describe Matt McCarty, the 26-year-old PGA Tour pro who emerged victorious at the Black Desert Championship?! What makes it even more special is that it was just his second start on the men’s circuit after being promoted from the Korn Ferry Tour, and his third start overall. Even he seemed surprised by the win, to be honest!

The golfer was interviewed after his win at the FedEx Cup Fall event conveying surprise at how quickly he found success on Tour. “I knew if I played well this week after last week I would have a chance,” said the pro while hinting at his T63 finish at the Sanderson Farms Championship. “But to do it like this, I don’t know how you can kind of expect this, to be honest. I don’t know.”

The athlete then reflected on how it felt teeing off at the Sanderson Farms Championship and then the Black Desert Championship so soon after his promotion from the Korn Ferry Tour. McCarty also revealed what he had originally aimed for, compared to the tremendous success he achieved. “To get out here a little early was just like,” said the pro before adding, “To get some experience was great, and obviously this now. I mean, it’s just been a crazy last few months for me. It’s been a lot of fun.” It appears even he was surprised with the victory coming off so soon.

But how will this win change his life? Worry not, for Matt McCarty had an answer to that as well. “I mean, financially for sure. I don’t know,” replied the athlete as he alluded to the $1,350,000 winner’s cut when the same query was posed to him. “I’m just really excited for all the opportunities that come with this and everything. This is what I’ve wanted to do.”

The 26-year-old also expressed his excitement about being able to tee off in the upcoming events that he was exempted from as a result of the recent win. “To be able to play in all these tournaments I’m going to be able to play in coming up is going to be really special,” shared McCarty. “So I am just really looking forward to that.” Interestingly, the golfer seemed to be hinting at the 2025 PLAYERS Championship, The Sentry, and the four major championships that invite PGA Tour winners. All of this was thanks to his remarkable performance at the Black Desert Championship.

Have an interesting take?

Curious as to how he emerged victorious at the Black Desert Resort in Utah? The American golfer posted a score of 23-under 261, with rounds of 62-68-64-67 over the four days of play. As a result, he secured the top spot on the leaderboard and won the event by three strokes ahead of Stephan Jaeger, who finished T2.

Over the four rounds, McCarty carded a total of 23 birdies and six bogeys, not to mention the three eagles he scored in the first, third, and fourth rounds. Who would have thought that a golfer who qualified but missed the cut for the 2022 U.S. Open would spend the season on the Korn Ferry Tour and come back stronger than ever to win an event on the PGA Tour?! McCarty certainly didn’t!
