This week, the highly anticipated FedEx Cup playoff event has attracted some of the most renowned golfers. With the implementation of new regulations, only the top 70 golfers in the FedEx rankings will have the opportunity to tee off this year. Unfortunately, as a result of this revised format, numerous exceptional players, including Justin Thomas, will be unable to showcase their skills in Memphis.

This, though, has raised several questions in the golfing community. A few of the golfers, including past major champions as well as the reigning Masters victor, have already spoken about it. And now, in a pre-match press conference, Scottie Scheffler too had something to say about the new FedEx format, but in a positive way.

On the final day leading up to the St. Jude Championship, Scheffler addressed the new format rules in a press conference. The moderator inquired about his thoughts on the subject, prompting Scheffler to reveal that the format has brought about a refreshing change. With a much smaller field this time, the 27-year-old golfer expressed his positive outlook on the event.

The American golf pro stated, “I think it would be more rewarding for the guys that have played the best throughout the year.” He even went on to talk about the point system changes. According to Scheffler, 2,000 points for a win this week will be more gratifying for individuals who have played golf consistently all year.

Additionally, the world No. 1, like others, finds it peculiar that only seventy golfers will be participating in the event. However, he remains open-minded and is eager to see how things will unfold. In fact, he believes that this unique format will serve as a positive and exciting way to conclude the year. “It’s exciting for us, and it’s the season-long race. Yeah, we’ll see how it shakes out.” Scheffler concluded.

Well, Scheffler isn’t the only one who stood for FedEx playoff adjustments. Jon Rahm, who is entering the playoffs as the No. 1 player on the ranking list for the first time, recently endorsed the new format.

Jon Rahm opens up about golfers getting a spot in the FedEx Cup

In a press conference held on August 8th, the 2023 Masters champion also shed light on the new format and how he was in favor of it. “I like it,” he stated. Rahm went on to explain that the new adaptation now made sense to him and claimed that it may just continue to be the Tour’s go-to format in the years that follow.

He went on to clarify that even the format worked well for the players who did not qualify for the FedEx playoff one year since they could start fresh the next season and compete to find a spot. To him, it “logically” made sense.
