A T39 at Pebble Beach Golf Links, a T30 at Bay Hill, followed by two missed cuts. It appears Jordan Spieth did not have the best of starts in 2024 after the Sentry back in January. Well, come to the week before the Masters Tournament, he would have hoped to put up a better performance. But, unfortunately, the day didn’t seem to go as planned for the golfer, leading to him feeling a mixture of emotions.

The 30-year-old was spotted in an interview after the first round of play at the Valero Texas Open. Meanwhile, he was faced with a query on what he felt while playing the 14th and the subsequent holes during the same. Interestingly so, Spieth couldn’t help but point out how “bizarre” the whole situation was, all the while surprisingly expressing his frustration at the ball not going where he wanted it to go!

“It’s hard to explain,” confessed Spieth when asked about his emotions during the day’s play. Why? Well, for Spieth, it feels like he has been playing better than what the score says, despite the scorecard not depicting the same. “I’ve played way worse and had consecutive top-10s than the missed cuts that I’ve had,” added the golfer while recounting the times he finished better in spite of bad gameplay.

That’s not all. The 3-time major champ also expressed, “It’s just very bizarre,” before continuing, Like my game feels fine and I’m just not getting much out of it.” What’s more, the pro expressed how exasperating it was while recalling the double bogey he carded on the par-5, 14th; “It’s extremely frustrating because I drove the living piss out of the ball today and I picked the wrong line on 14 and it’s the one drive I missed honestly like five, six yards right of where I was looking and then I don’t find it.”

Spieth could only look on in disbelief at the situation as he added, “I was like, see, now my driving stats don’t look the way they actually feel and I’m 4 over… What in the world is going on?” Anyhow, the PGA Tour pro managed to end the round 1-over with a late save in the back nine. This, in turn, helped boost his confidence, “I got a couple of nice breaks late that maybe make me feel like the game’s not as hard as it’s been feeling. “

Anyhow, the final few sets of holes helped him finish better than he initially started on the first day of play. However, what turned the heads of many was the iconic hole-in-one he carded when he was as low as T97 at a point in time.

Spieth and his insane feat at the 16th hole

Surprisingly, Jordan Spieth managed to dish out a hole-in-one on the par-3, 16th hole using a 7-iron from a distance of 199 yards. What’s more, this ace interestingly came during a day filled with five bogeys, a double bogey, and four birdies. No wonder the golfer dubbed the last few holes as nothing short of a “nice break” that helped him feel a bit better.

Even so, after the end of day one, the 30-year-old could only finish at T80 with a score of 1-over 73. Well, one can hope he manages to dust himself off and move forward since he sure has his work cut out for him if he is to make the weekend cut and have a chance at the trophy.
