Would Nick Dunlap be where he is today without his parents' relentless encouragement?

“I’m so proud of you!” Who wouldn’t want to hear those words, especially from one’s own parents? That is exactly what Nick Dunlap heard from his mother after clinching his second win on the PGA Tour. It’s no surprise that the athlete managed to catch the eyes of many in the community, especially with the immense support from his father and mother.

While one can attribute the feats that the golfer has achieved to his immense talent, none of it would have been possible without the help of his dad and mom. It is natural to be curious about the two strong pillars of support that have been present in Dunlap’s life from the time of his birth.

The talented athlete was born on December 23, 2003, to Jim and Charlene Dunlap. They raised a young Nick Dunlap in Huntsville, Alabama. It was through his father that the youngster was introduced to the game of golf. “I remember being out hitting golf balls, you know, as good as I am, shaking ’em,” recounted his dad while saying, “He was six or seven years old, picked up one of my clubs and hit some spots on it I’ve never hit before.”

His father dubbed the incident a “proud” moment in their lives, owing to the talent that the young athlete had, which shaped him into the PGA Tour professional he is now. Since then, the husband and wife have helped Nick Dunlap realize his dreams of becoming a golfer. “I don’t know if I could even share how many times but lots of dedication to watching what we watched today,” divulged his mother after his first PGA Tour win when the interviewer asked how many times the parents had driven him to tournaments.

Dunlap’s parents and their constant support of the greens

The support his parents provided has helped him achieve many feats over the years. At the age of 12, they helped the young golfer participate in a junior competition in Alabama. The result? His performance was nothing short of terrific as he fired a round of 59 at the Highland Park Golf Course in Birmingham to win the event by 13 strokes.

Have an interesting take?

That’s not all. Just two years later, at the age of 14, he shot a final round 66 at the Alabama Boys State Junior Championship (14-18 age division) to emerge victorious by five strokes. Moreover, the golfer’s performance was the lowest any athlete in the field carded that day, beating the field average by 10 strokes.

The constant presence and support of Dunlap’s parents even helped the now-professional athlete play in his first major championship at the age of 18. He received an exemption into the event due to his 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur win, where the Alabama native defeated Cohen Trolio. Two years later, he emerged victorious at the 2023 U.S. Amateur, becoming the only player, aside from Tiger Woods, to win both the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Junior Amateur. And his mother was there beside him as well.

The emotional mom hurried to embrace the athlete as soon as he secured the victory at Cherry Hills Country Club. She didn’t break the tradition when he won his first PGA Tour title at the 2024 American Express. However, for his second win, the two could only enjoy the moment through a phone call.

Dunlap’s emotional moment with mother after Barracuda Championship

“Oh my gosh son, what an amazing round,” exclaimed Charlene Dunlap after her son won his second PGA Tour title. “You know you’ve worked so hard over the last several months to get back to where you were before the AmEx. How awesome.” The golfer held back his emotions and thanked his mom before asking if they would come next week to watch him play at the 3M Open. Her reply? “I am going to tell my boss I’m taking next week off, I’m coming out to 3M.”

Nevertheless, one thing is for sure: the golfer is destined to reach even greater heights in the golfing world, especially with the continued support from his parents.
