Scheffler's heart vs. his earnings: Which one makes him a true champion in your eyes?

If there had been an award for simplicity on the PGA Tour, Scottie Scheffler would easily have won that one too. After winning the Tour Championship, the golfer earned $62,228,357 this season alone. What helped him achieve this staggering amount? Well, firstly, it’s his official 2024 PGA Tour earnings amounting to $29,228,357, and then he got the $25 million bonus for capturing the FedEx Cup playoffs. Lastly, it’s the $8 million Comcast bonus that took the yearly earnings to a whopping $62,228,357. Despite having a staggering sum in his bank account, he remains someone who has a minimalist personality.

Interestingly, there aren’t just a couple of incidents that show Scheffler never had any interest in money, fame, or anything. In fact, there are five that illustrate his simplistic approach to life, despite his multimillion-dollar earnings.

a) Scottie Scheffler still uses wired earphones

Before heading to the final round of the Tour Championship, Scheffler was spotted wearing a pair of old-school wired earphones. Surprising, isn’t it? We are in 2024, where wireless earbuds dominate the world but seeing Scheffler still using wired ones to listen to his favorite music was a strangely odd yet fulfilling moment. Not only that, he even tucked them under his T-shirt, a classic move.

The community was impressed witnessing this and expressed their thoughts with comments like Wired earbuds are definitely on brand for Scottie Scheffler. Money does not change that man.” But that’s not the only old-school thing he is sticking to.

b) The 2x Masters Champion still drives the 2012 Yukon

While you might think wired earphones were surprising, there is more. Back in 2022, during the Fed Ex Cup, Scottie Scheffler revealed that he still drives the same GMC Yukon his dad gave him back in 2012, while he was at the University of Texas in Austin. With the earnings he has, the 28-year-old can easily buy luxurious cars, but he is still sticking to his classic Yukon.

The golfer also revealed that he will continue to use the same car as long as it’s functional. Even his wife, Meredith, doesn’t like to use that car and prefers her own when they are going out. Scheffler appears to be the complete opposite of Rory McIlroy in this regard, as McIlroy boasts an impressive collection of exotic cars.

c) Scottie Scheffler doesn’t have any expensive hobbies

Just like Rory McIlroy, other renowned golfers like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and more have some high-end cars like Ferraris, Porsches, and Bentleys, which cost anywhere from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. However, there are no reports of Scheffler having any of those.

Golfers like Rickie Fowler own a Gulfstream V (Puma) private jet that costs around $30 million, as revealed on the Jet Finder website. Speaking of expensive hobbies, there are also reports that Woods owns a private 155-foot yacht. Meanwhile, Scheffler hasn’t purchased anything like that.

d) The 28-year-old’s victory celebrations aren’t grand

While playing on professional greens, winning even one major title means a lot for golfers; Scheffler has two of them. Some golfers like to celebrate their win with champagne showers; there are also pros like Bryson DeChambeau, who carried his silver trophy everywhere after winning the 2024 US Open. But the 28-year-old doesn’t do anything like that. After claiming the green jacket this year at the Augusta National, Scheffler simply hugged his parents and other family members as he walked off the 18th green, and that’s all he did as a celebration.

The Olympics too hold great significance in an athlete’s life, and it is no different for Scottie Scheffler. After winning gold for his country at the Paris Olympics, he was visibly moved, with tears in his eyes. However, when asked about whether he used the medal as a ball marker or did anything special to celebrate, his answer was “No, nothing crazy.”

He didn’t do anything to show off the gold medal as well. When asked if he ever feels like showing it off, this is what he said: “Honestly, it’s a bit heavy around the neck. No, I brought it for a deal this morning, and I promptly put it back in my backpack.”

e) Scottie Scheffler always prioritizes his family

Golf is just a part of his life, and not his entire life. Scheffler values his family over anything else. Anyone who has watched Scheffler this season can easily agree with this. While Scheffler was having the time of his life on the greens earlier this season, his beautiful Mere was pregnant with their first child.

When asked at the Masters about his accessibility to his wife at a competition of this stature, the 28-year-old said, “Definitely have a way to get home pretty quickly. We have somebody here who has access to their cell phone if that’s all right. And, yes, I’ll be available to go home then whenever I need to.” It denotes that Scottie Scheffler doesn’t want money or fame; instead, he just wants to play golf, be with his family and be a better person.

The golfer indeed prioritizes his professional life, as he said during the Masters, “Golf is something that I do. It’s a tremendously huge part of my life,” but also added, “But it doesn’t define me as a person.” Which we already know as he always prioritizes his family and keeps a simple approach in life. However, Scottie Scheffler had a different answer when asked what defines him as a person. “I’m a faithful guy; I believe in a creator… in Jesus. Ultimately, I think that’s what defines me the most, said the golfer.
