For the longest time, Rory McIlroy has been one of the most prominent critics of LIV Golf. In fact, he has launched scathing attacks against the Saudi-funded league several times over the past year. Consequently, his friendship with LIV defector and former Ryder Cup teammate Sergio Garcia also suffered.

But the shocking new $3,000,000,000 merger between LIV and its rival tours has set the ball rolling for many big changes in the golf world. Even McIlroy and Garcia have resolved their differences, per the LIV pro’s latest revelation. However, as the mega-merger steadily takes shape, the eerie silence from golf’s biggest star, Tiger Woods, raises many questions.

Earlier this month, Jay Monahan shocked the golf community by announcing the PGA Tour’s plans to merge with LIV. Players and fans were left utterly dismayed as the Tour backtracked on its previous disapproval of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF)-backed league.

A lot has happened since then. The PGA Tour has tried to appease loyalists with big promises. The rival golf circuits have made a move to drop lawsuits against each other. And sparring players have begun to reconcile. But where does Tiger Woods, arguably the greatest golfer ever, stand amidst all this?

In 2022, LIV’s CEO, Greg Norman, confirmed that Woods was one of the players the league had approached to join their ranks. Per reports, the 15-time major winner has allegedly turned his back on a deal worth $700–$800 million! In fact, last year, he put his unrivaled influence to use and flew to Delaware to meet with a roster of the biggest players before the second FedEx Cup playoff event. His move was key to the adoption of designated events with jaw-dropping prize purses and many more lucrative offers for golfers.

The 82-time PGA Tour winner, in all likelihood, is rather unhappy about the current state of things. The way the Tour has left loyal golfers in the dark about the decision only adds fuel to the fire. After all, what purpose does the Player Advisory Council, comprising 16 Tour pros, serve if disruptive changes are to be made without taking their inputs into account?

Currently, Woods is away from action and recuperating from ankle surgery. The high-tech indoor golf league, TGL, also occupies a significant amount of his time and attention. Fans now wait to see if Woods will speak out against the new union or follow in McIlroy’s footsteps and mend the fences as well.

Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy make amends following the PGA Tour-LIV merger

On Wednesday, golf fans were in for a huge surprise as Sergio Garcia revealed that his feud with Rory McIlroy was finally over. Per the 2017 Masters winner, it happened during the recently concluded US Open.

Obviously, Angela [Garcia’s wife] and Erica [McIlroy’s wife], they said ‘Hi’ to each other at the US Open, and there was a nice text from Rory to her, and that kind of gave me the incentive to reach out to him,” he shared ahead of LIV Valderrama. “I have been thinking about it for a while, but I wasn’t totally sure about it.

Just last month, the World No. 3 voiced his opposition to the inclusion of LIV defectors in Europe’s Ryder Cup team. Both McIlroy and Garcia had been teammates at the biennial event on five separate occasions. They also boast a 2-0-2 record when paired together. At one point, they shared a great camaraderie off the greens as well. The Northern Irish player even served as a groomsman at Garcia’s wedding. With their previous conflict now behind them, it will be interesting to see how things play out between the two down the road.
