Unfair for some, a second chance for another! What else can be said about the return of Angel Cabrera to the PGA Tour? In a surprising decision, the golfing body had, not too long ago, allowed the 54-year-old to appear for the upcoming season under strict conditions. However, the verdict seems to be nothing short of a poke at the wounds of the LIV Golf players.

The professionals from the Saudi-backed league are currently banned from playing in PGA Tour events. But, as the senior pro experiences a second chance to come back on the circuit, he has managed to garner another opportunity as well, a possibility of playing in a major, unlike most LIV golfers!

After spending more than 30 months in prison, Cabrera returned to society in August 2023, eyeing redemption in both society and the game. And now, it seems the golfer would be able to fulfill the latter part of his goals as his suspension from the PGA Tour events was lifted by the golfing body.

And now, as he takes part in the upcoming tournaments, the athlete will be able to gain points on the OWGR, thereby placing him in the standings. Although he is currently unranked, the professional can increase his position by being one of the top-placed players in the global rankings, thereby increasing his chances for a major qualification. However, for the Masters Tournament, the 3X PGA Tour champ has a lifetime exemption owing to his 2009 win.

Meanwhile, most of the golfers on the PIF-funded circuit find themselves lacking a chance to play at the four events because of the ranking body’s decision to deny them points. What’s more, only a few, including the likes of Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau, among others, are qualified to participate as a result of their previous major wins. The OWGR declining their plea has truly led them to suffer in dejection!

Despite everything, as an athlete, it is truly a dream come true for the Brazilian golfer to be able to play on the men’s circuit. There is nothing short of a second chance at golf!

Cabrera’s return to profession golf

Owing to some legal issues with his ex-wife, Silva Rivadero, and two ex-girlfriends, Micaela Escudero and Cecilia Torres Mana, the athlete was serving concurrent terms in jail. However, he was released after 30 months from the minimum-security prison east of Córdoba in August 2023, where he spent the last seven months of his incarceration.

What’s more, his return to the PGA Tour is allowed on the condition that it will be imposed in the future if his “procedural situation” takes a turn for the worse. Nevertheless, in an exclusive interview, he said, “All I can do is move forward and do something different,” as he looked into the future in the hope of playing in the men’s circuit as well as the majors. Widely known as the best golfer that Argentina has produced, he would be looking to claim that title again!
