The 2023 BMW Championship is all set to commence this week at the Olympia Fields Country Club. However, prior to the commencement of the event, Jon Rahm, the defending champion on these greens, was seen answering diverse questions. While most reporters remained concerned about his outlook for the future, being the FedEx Cup Leader currently, others mostly focused on his 2020 win on the same field.
Among all the gameplay-related questions, one journalist asked Rahm about having paid attention to the fires on Maui. Rather sincerely, the Spanish golfer answered, “I’m deeply sorry for everybody that lost somebody over there“. Referring to the most deadly US wildfire in over a century, the 28-year-old reiterated his sadness over such an unfortunate incident.
Jon Rahm, expressing his concern and hope for recovery, mentioned one of his fellow golfers, Collin Morikawa. The Californian golfer’s grandfather owned a restaurant called The Morikawa Restaurant on Front Street in Lahaina. Unfortunately, the business and the homes all around it have been destroyed.
Shedding light on the same, the 2023 Masters Tournament winner mentioned, “I’m hoping they can rebuild Lahaina as quickly as possible“. Further, the golfer even talked about feeling extreme dismay over the people facing these troubled times.
This urged the athlete to add how sad the situation is “especially for a culture that cares about their native land as much as Hawaiians do“. Other than Rahm, even Michelle Wie West, who is a native of the state, expressed her remorse over the heartbreaking situation as she came forward to provide a helping hand for her people.
